A Mountain Community

Safety Tip

Jul 01, 2005

Our summer monsoon season officially begins on July 4th,
if we?’re lucky! Here are a couple of monsoon season
safety tips for those of you new to the Old Pueblo, and a
reminder for everyone else.

1. If a street is barricaded due to water runoff, find another
route. They are barricaded for a reason! YOUR SAFETY!
We have a stupid motorist law in Tucson, you face being
charged a rescue fee by the fire department, possibly a fine
from City of Tucson, or death, your choice.

2. NEVER touch a downed power line, call Tucson
Electric Power or 911 to report it. If you are in your
vehicle and a power line falls across the vehicle. STAY IN
YOUR VEHICLE. You are protected from electric shock
inside the vehicle.

3. Get off the golf course! You have a lightning rod in
your hands!

4. Never take shelter under a tree or ramada. Lightning
strikes the highest object available. Your safe in a
grounded building or vehicle.

5. If you are in the mountains, seek shelter immediately!
Lightning is particularly active in the mountains.

6. NEVER play in streambeds, rivers, canyons and
washes during a thunderstorm, near or far away. You risk
death from flash flooding. The west has a long history of
these incidents, including Tucson.

7. If your hair stands on end, you are in extreme danger of
being struck by lightning. Crouch immediately on the balls
of your toes with your heels up off the ground and your
arms protecting your head. Maybe you will just lose your
toes this way!
