Where can I recycle auto batteries?
Auto batteries contain a corrosive and should never be placed in the trash. Arvada Recycling, located at 9630 Ralston Road (behind K-Mart), accepts used auto batteries for recycling. Their phone number is 303-423-4189. Call a service station near you to see if they accept used auto batteries or trade them in when you get a new battery. The Jefferson County Household Chemical Collection Center accepts used auto batteries and other household hazardous wastes. There is a $5 fee and you need a reservation which can be made by calling 303-316-6262. If you have any questions, call Environmental Services at 303-431-3042.

Where can I recycle grass and leaves?
In a joint venture of the City of Arvada, Permagreen Products, and Waste Management of Colorado, a grass/leaf recycling program has been established. Residents not wishing to leave their clippings on their lawn can take their bagged grass to the grass/leaf recycling station located at 6161 Olde Wadsworth Boulevard. The program will continue until the end of October or into November, depending on weather.

Where can I dispose of used motor oil?
Used oil contains lead and other metals, and is flammable and poisonous. Used motor oil should be placed in a plastic container with a tight fitting lid. After bringing it to the recycling station, wrap the empty containers in newspaper and discard in the trash. Never dump used motor oil down any type of drains! Never throw used motor oil in the trash! There are several places to recycle used motor oil. Most locations will accept up to five gallons at a time, so don't save it up to bring all at one time. Some places that accept used motor oil for recycling are Sears at Westland Mall located at 10785 W. Colfax Avenue(303-235-6128), the Westminster City Shops at 6777 W. 88th Avenue (303-430-2400,ext. 2517), and some Amoco and Texaco stations. Call the one nearest to you. Also, the Jefferson County Household Chemical Collection Center accepts used motor oil and other household hazardous wastes. Ideally antifreeze should be recycled, which can be done through the Jefferson County Household Chemical Collection Center which also accepts other house hold hazardous wastes. There is a $5 fee and you need a reservation which can be made by calling 303-316-6262. If you cannot make it to the Household Chemical Collection Center, antifreeze may be safely disposed of down a house hold drain. However, you should flush with lots of water. Do not throw used antifreeze in the trash! Antifreeze has a sweet taste and pets will drink it,often causing death. Antifreeze should never be dumped down a storm drain. Storm drains empty into creeks and antifreeze could pollute the water. For further information, call Environmental Services at 303-431-3042.


Disposal

Where can I dispose of household hazardous waste? Household hazardous waste should be disposed of properly to avoid environmental contamination and a threat to public health. You can dispose of common household hazardous waste at the Jefferson County Household chemical collection Center. Material is accepted every Saturday. On the first Saturday of the month all common materials are accepted. On the remaining Saturdays only paint, oil, antifreeze and tires are accepted. There is a $5 fee plus an additional fee for tires. You need a reservation, which can be made by calling 303-316-6262.

Where can I dispose of old or used paint?
Old or used paint may be donated to a local church, shelter, or school. If you are unable to donate the paint, the Jefferson County Household chemical collection Center accepts paint and other household hazardous wastes. There is a $5 fee and you need a reservation, which can be made by calling 303-316-6262. If the paint is latex (that is water based) it may be disposed of in the regular trash if it is allowed to completely dry out. If you do not want to spend the time to dry the paint you can mix the latex paint with kitty litter and then dispose of it in the trash.
