VANDERBILT PARK AND THE TENT CITY PROPOSAL

A subcommittee of Denver?’s Commission on Homelessness will be researching and making recommondations to the Mayor about the tent city issue. This issue is pertinent because Vanderbilt Park, loacted in the SE corner of our neighborhood, is on the short-list of possible tent city sites. The subcommittee meets the 3rd Tuesday of each month from 1:30 to 3:00p.m. at Denver Department of Human Services, 1200 Federal Blvd., in Room 3110/12.

APNA seeks a volunteer or two who can attend these public meetings and keep us in the loop. Call Carol 303-698-0161.

NEW DEVELOPMENTS

We hear there?’s a dollar store going in at the old Earl Schieb location on W. Alameda. Opening soon. Plans for a new retail development with an auto parts store have just been approved for the old Faye Meyers site at W. Alameda and S. Tejon. A new retail development is in the works for W. Kentucky and S. Federal which will tie-in with the Vietnamese restaurant on that block.

PROBLEM SOLVED

Thanks to David Taylor, owner of Labor Express Temporary Services at 2748 W. Alameda, for being responsive to area residents and working quickly to resolve problems created by his clientele. Once alerted to the problems of public urination (and worse) and a loss of a sense of security neighbors to the business always had an audience when coming and going from their property or when trying to enjoy their front yards), Mr. Taylor put up a fence that provided a screened area for his laborers to wait in and provided them with rest room access for the first time.

?‘No loitering?’ signs were also posted. The result has been a return of peace and quiet in the immediate area. Thanks also to Pat and Sandy Padbury and NPO Nick Grove for problem solving this for the neighborhood!

MILEAGE MARKERS

Check out the new 1/10th mile markers along the lake and perimeter paths around Huston Lake. The idea to denote the paths?’ mileage came from neighbor Jackie Cobos who exercises regularly at the park and wanted to know how far she was going every day. APNA worked in partnership with our Park Planner Mark Bernstein and the gents of Parks & Rec. Construction & Maintenance: Jerry Garcia and Larry Bebee to further develop the mileage marker idea into a reality.

It was wonderful to work with city employees so positive and helpful with their ?‘can do?’ attitudes! Thanks to neighbors Debi Drews, Carol Warner, and Jeanette Zimmer for teaming with Carol e Campbell to do the stenciling.

?—Editor?’s note: Kids, check out the really, really
HUMONGOUS tadpoles in the lake right now, but hurry, as they?’re quickly morphing into frogs!
