15th annual Athmar Park summer picnic, held on August 28 at Huston Lake Park, was great way to enjoy a beautiful day among friends. The sun was shining bright all day while residents enjoyed each other?’s potluck delights, along with fried chicken from KFC (925 S. Federal) and refreshments from the Great American Beer Store (1333 W. Alameda), Skydeck Liquors (2200 W. Alameda), and Bootlegger Liquors (2375 W. Alameda) who generously donated soda pop again this year. The gents from Fire Station #23 delighted young and old alike by giving tours of the fire truck and pumper... and by shooting a giant spray of water up into the air, creating a wonderful cascade under which to run back and forth, squealing all the while! What soggy fun was had by all!
Councilwomen Mackenzie and Rodriguez joined the picnic and kindly listened to neighborhood concerns. Neighborhood children enjoyed having their faces painted by Ana Gonzales while waiting their turns to compete in the sidewalk chalk art competition.
The talented Miss Alexis Montoya and Mr. Jesse Sebastyen won first and second place out of 32 chalk-drawing entries. Miss Adora Green and Miss Kuli Rae Fowler won first and second place in the kindergarten and under category. Everyone received a prize! Prizes for the chalk art competition were donated by JoAnn Martinez and the Campbell Family.
A fun time was had by all and we hope to see you at the summer picnic next year!
