Denver Digs Trees Extends Tree Request Deadling to March 1st!

Mar 12, 2004

What happens when you plant a tree? The air gets cleaner, utility costs go down, property values rise, crime rates go down, water gets recycled, noise is absorbed, and neighborhoods are strengthened. Wow!! I bet you didn?¹t think one person could do so much, just by planting a tree!

The Park People?¹s ?³Denver Digs Trees?² program has been providing low-cost trees for planting along Denver?¹s streets and parkways for 15 years. We know that trees enhance the livability of our city and beautify our neighborhoods. More than 23,000 trees have been planted through Denver Digs Trees and we hope you?¹ll join our efforts by adding to Denver?¹s legacy of tree-lined streets.

For all of you who sent your application in by January 16th to see if you qualify for a tree to be planted in the public right-of-way, Great Job!! For those of you who did not get around to it, the deadline for requesting low-cost or free street trees has been extended to March 1st. Tree request forms are available on The Park People's website at www.theparkpeople.org.

Forms can also be requested by calling 303-722-6262, or by email at: info@theparkpeople.org.

In March, you will receive your final notification on what tree(s) you?¹ve been approved for, and what to do to prepare for their arrival. Tree planting and care workshops will be scheduled at no charge for everyone to learn how to properly plant a tree, and how to make sure it gets off to a healthy start. If approved, you can pick up your tree at your designated distribution site between 8:00 am and 11:00 a. on April 17th.

If you do not qualify for a tree, there are still many things you can do to contribute to the quality of your city. Denver Digs Trees needs volunteers willing to be trained as Site Inspectors. Prior to Tree Distribution day you will inspect properties of those who have requested street trees to ensure compliance with Denver?¹s tree planting ordinances. Before April 17th, help is needed to deliver trees to one of our six distribution sites. On Tree Distribution Day, April 17th, volunteers are needed to help distribute trees at each site and deliver and plant trees for those who are physically disabled. Students: what a great way to get in some community service time for school requirements!!

For those wishing to obtain trees for private property, we are once again offering our annual tree sale on April 17th, beginning after the requested street trees have been picked up. There will be numerous varieties of shade and ornamental trees. This is a very popular program because of the great price: the cost of each bare root tree is $40.00 and each balled and burlaped tree is $60.00. These trees do not need site approval for planting and cannot be pre-ordered or reserved, so first come, first served!

Thank you to all who have helped in the past. Your time and energy have ensured that this program continues to be successful. And to all who will be volunteering this year, see you April 17th rain, snow or shine! For more information or to volunteer, call Denver Digs Trees @ 303-722-6262. En Espa?±ol: 720-913-0651.
