We have had two meetings to discuss our neighborhood Blockwatch. Thanks to the captains and co-captains for all of their hard work. Have you noticed that posted signs? For the 3300 block, Gail Meyer and Betty Scalo run the show. For the 3400 block, Dave Ryan and Brent Collins are your contact.
For Grantswood, thanks to David Bader.
At the October Blockwatch meeting, setting up a neighborhood phone tree was discussed and planned. Every AR resident needs to participate for this to work.
When there is a problem with someone who is soliciting or something that seems suspicious, (after you have reported it first to our district police at 574-7111 or 571-2111), that person needs to call the household on their left side (when facing the street, house to your left).
Using the AR directory, you need to call until you talk to a person, and not to just an answering machine. You may have to call a couple of people, but in order for the "phone tree" to work and the chain not broken, you have to be able to speak to someone who in turn can call the person on their left side. If you live at the end of the street, remember the calls need to circle around the corner, even to our two Illinois Avenue residents. The same thing with Grantswood, the last house on AR Court needs to call the first house on their left side that is on Grantswood. The Metro Council has said this is what is needed and will work if it is a "circle of the neighborhood". If your phone number is not listed in the AR directory you will need to let your neighbor know your number or else you will be skipped on the calling.
The subject of night calls was brought up. If the problem is serious enough for the police to have been called and they find a situation going on, then the neighborhood should be on alert. Outside and inside lights should be turned on to show that our neighborhood is watching for the criminal. If you make the call to police, then you should start the "phone tree" to let your neighbors know that a criminal is roaming our neighborhood. Same thing during the day, any situation that has the police on alert in the neighborhood, the person reporting it should start the calls.
The next Blockwatch meeting will be held during the annual AR meeting in January. From there, the meetings will be held twice a year, once in June and the other in January.
