Public Safety Committee Meeting: September 12,2002

Minutes

The Public Safety Committee of ARNA met Thursday, September 12, 2002,
at 7:00 P.M. at CC's Coffee Shop, corner of Jefferson Ave. and Magazine
Street. Those present were chairman Everett Beelman, Trygger Vick, Robert
McPeek, Ken Fluellen, G. Michael Murrell, Pat Murrell, Jim Reese, Clyde
Patton, Virginia Saussy, and Michele Beelman.
The first items on the agenda were crime and private patrols. Trygger
Vick, president of PALANCE Patrol Group, and Robert McPeek, president of
Burtheville Community Patrol (BCP)spoke to the committee about the available
private patrols. PALANCE covers the area from Tchoupitoulas to Magazine,
Nashville to State. BCP covers State Street to Audubon Park, Tchoupitoulas
to Magazine. The cost is nominal, and NOPD policemen patrol the areas and
are available to meet participants when coming home at night, and so forth.
Virginia Saussy suggested putting something in ARNA Newsletter to let
members know of these services. The area from Nashville to Jefferson Avenue
is not covered, and the possibility of extending patrols to that area was
discussed. The committee decided to let residents know of services through
the newsletter and website. Phone numbers and e-mails for BCP and PALANCE
will be published. Some areas might combine, but the committe does not want
the police patrols to be spread too thin. NOPP patrols the area from
Magazine to Prytania, Nashville to Park.
Concerning crime, the committee talked about statistics which are
avilable through ARNA website links. In addtion, the committee discussed
the possibility of having workshops for ARNA membership on safety and
self-defense. Virginia Saussy volunteered to contact the Crime Prevention
Officer at the Second District Police Station to investigate having a
"Safety Night" for ARNA, possibly in November.
Traffic concerns were discussed. Ken Fluellen brought up the need for
a stop sign at Nashville and Laurel and will try to put it on the "Talk
About It" section on the website. Robert Mcedg said that there are still no
school signs for the school located at St. Francis on State Street. Other
concerns were for the traffic associated with the new Whole Food complex on
Magazine and with Children's Hospital which still has no parking garage
although promised long ago. The hospital attracts 1500 people a day and is
causing a parking problem at the tennis court and for the immediate
neighbors.
Whether or not ARNA Board approval is necessary for action taken by the
Public Saftey Committee was discussed. The committee decided it can do much
on its own. The committee will investigate circulating petitions and will
contact Jay Batt's office, via Esther Moody and Linda Diaz, about traffic
concerns.
The committee decided to introduce residents to the patrol services at
the next general meeting October 1 and will have the next Public Safety
Committee Meeting October 10, 2002--place to be announced. The meeting was
adjourned at 8:30 P.M.
