Don't let diabetes rob you of a healthy life!
November is National Diabetes Month
By Robin R. Nobles
According to the National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse
(http://www.niddk.nih.gov/health/diabetes/pubs/dmstats/dmst
ats.htm), 15.7 million people, or 5.9 percent of the U.S.
population, have diabetes.
798,000 new cases of diabetes are diagnosed every year. The
American Diabetes Association estimated that in 1997, diabetes in
the U.S. cost $98 billion, either directly or indirectly.
Diabetes is a fierce disease, with complications such as heart
disease, stroke, high blood pressure, blindness, kidney disease,
amputations, and the list goes on.
So, in honor of National Diabetes Month, let's go to the Internet
for more information on this disease. Remember, however, that
these sites aren't meant to and won't take the place of your
local doctor.
By far, one of the leading sources of information on childhood
diabetes is the Children with Diabetes Web site. The site is
designed to be an online community, and that's just what it is.
Parents can get support from other parents "who have been there."
Or, they can visit the recipe area for some delicious recipes
that won't send sugar levels to the ceiling. The site also
features reviews about various diabetes products, like pumps,
testing meters, etc. http://www.childrenwithdiabetes.com
Parents and teachers have many considerations to work through
when sending a child with diabetes to school. The ADA created
these helpful guidelines on caring for children with diabetes in
the school and day care setting.
http://journal.diabetes.org/FullText/Supplements/DiabetesCa
re/Supplement101/S108.htm
Out of the 15 million people with diabetes in the U.S., 5 million
are undiagnosed. So, let's visit a site that offers a list of
signs and symptoms of the disease. If you're experiencing these
symptoms, be sure to make an appointment to visit your local
doctor. http://www.diabetes-and-symptoms.com/
The Diabetes Mall is another excellent site with information on
diabetes. You'll learn how to cope with complications, how to
treat high and low blood sugars, and how to manage diabetes
during the cold and flu season. http://www.diabetesnet.com/
Rather than insulin, physicians may prescribe oral medications
for Type 2 diabetics. For more information about the various
types of oral medications for diabetics, visit Lifeclinic's
Diabetes Channel.
http://www.lifeclinic.com/focus/diabetes/Oral.asp
Join in the fight for a cure for diabetes! (Hint: Need a tax
deduction before the end of the year?) Contribute through the
Children with Diabetes Foundation (http://www.cwdfoundation.org/)
or the American Diabetes Association (http://www.diabetes.org),
and know that your contribution will help to improve the lives of
those with diabetes and will move us that much closer to a cure.
Finally, Rick Mendosa's Diabetes Directory is second to none for
providing a comprehensive online listing of diabetes-related
sites and articles. http://www.mendosa.com/diabetes.htm
P.S. If you live in Hattiesburg or surrounding areas, visit
Forrest General Hospital's Web site, click on FGH Services, and
look for Diabetes. Our local Diabetes Care Center is excellent,
and they offer courses and support for those with diabetes.
