BERWICK BLOCKWATCH IMPLEMENTATION: CANVASSING THE NEIGHBORHOOD TO BEGIN MAY 2, 2009

Lloyd Clark, BCA Blockwatch Chairman, and Deborah Points, Vice-Chairman, conducted a Training Session for Blockwatch Volunteers at our meeting on March 3, 2009 which was held at the Redeemer Lutheran Church. This was the third meeting in a series designed to inform the community of the purpose, responsibilities/roles of its members, organizational structure, goals, plan/strategies, recruit volunteers, training, and to solicit ideas/suggestions for implementation of the BCA Blockwatch Plan. Blockwatch Training materials were passed out as well as Blockwatch Signs for members. Based on the community input, it was decided that we work from the ?“bottom up?” since Berwick encompasses an area comprised of 1600 residents and recruit additional Zone Captains for our three Zones (A, B, & C). We will break down Berwick into much smaller areas where folks can get to know residents as we plan to sponsor various activities, i.e. Cookouts, bicycling, walking, etc. The plan is to contact our Blockwatch volunteers to canvass the neighborhoods and inform residents of our Blockwatch program, distribute information regarding Blockwatch activities and important contacts within our organization such as the Precinct Liaison Officer, Jarrod James. We also can determine by your street address what zone you reside in and who eventually will be assigned to be the contact person/Zone Captain.
We will be calling residents who signed up as volunteers to participate in our ?“Canvassing the Neighborhood?” campaign on May 2, 2009. Details of this event will be forthcoming.
The downsizing of our economy has increased the importance of Neighborhood Block watches due to the increase in crime and police budget cuts. This is why it is so important to become the ?“eyes and ears?” of the neighborhood and join your neighborhood Blockwatch. It?’s as easy as calling 614.Berwick (237.9425). I am pleased to see the interest and enthusiasm from our members and I welcome your suggestions.
