Bixby Park Band Shell

Picture

If a tree falls in Bixby Park, can you hear it?

The storms of winter hit Long Beach extra hard, bringing rain, flooding and felled trees throughout the city. Many of you have doubtless seen the huge tree which destroyed the band shell in Bixby Park, right off Junipero and Second Street. This structure, on the border of our neighborhood, is a historic landmark dating from the early 1920’s, where it was used for concerts and assemblies. The BHNA, along with other neighborhood associations and preservation groups is supporting an effort to restore this structure. Housed in the Band Shell was Long Beach Parks & Recreation’s ceramics studio. Unfortunately, the studio was completely destroyed by the tree falling. The BHNA also supports the rebuilding of the ceramics studio either in the restored Band Shell or at another location in Bixby Park. Stay tuned for future information and fundraising opportunities to restore both of these cultural and artistic assets to our community!
