Denver PD Traffic Safety Alert!

Fatal Traffic Accidents...

The city of Denver has experienced an alarming increase in fatal traffic accidents in the year 2000. The officers of the Denver Police Department encourage all Denver citizens to slow, down, allow extra time for traffic congestion and road repair work, and to drive defensively. As summer approaches and the weather heats up, please take a moment to follow these suggestions for a safer summer. We must all work together to promote safety on our streets.

VEHICULAR TRAFFIC

Drivers must: SLOW DOWN!

The speed limit in residential areas is 25 mph unless otherwise posted, approach intersections with caution.

Make sure intersection is clear before proceeding even if you have the green light or right of way. Do not assume the other driver will yield the right of way. Be aware of, and abide by the posted speed limit. Allow enough time to arrive at the destination, factoring in the increased amount of traffic that is now prevalent in the city.

PEDESTRIANS

Pedestrians crossing the roadway at any point other than within a crosswalk shall yield the right of way to vehicles.

Pedestrians must cross the street at the intersection if no crosswalk is provided. Do not cross mid-block! Drivers must exercise due care to avoid hitting pedestrians, but remember, pedestrians must exercise good safety habits and insure their own safety. Wear reflective or light colored clothing if walking or running during night time hours.

CHILDREN

Talk to your children about safe pedestrian behavior, an then show them! Cross streets only at corners or designated areas. Do not cross midblock. Be careful even when playing on sidewalks. Be aware of driveways and vehicle access. Look both ways before crossing any street or road. Stop, Look, and Listen!

CYCLISTS

Know and abide by local and state traffic laws.
Be courteous, and drive defensively, be aware of your surroundings. Wear a helmet. Wear reflective or light colored clothing and use a front and rear light.
