DISPLACED NEW ORLEANS RESIDENTS

Plan briefing for Red Cross Shelter at Washington Monroe High School.

Mike McGuire gave us the first briefing. His office was given a call to action from the Mayor. POEM was asked to address the following needs: housing, health care, jobs, and education. Housing will be temporarily taken care of by the Red Cross at WAMO until they can get the people into more permanent housing. There will be health care available at the shelter for anyone who needs it. They will also be looking to get these people jobs and get the children enrolled in school as soon as possible. They understand that there are cultural issues involved here and they have a welcoming committee in place to make these displaced citizens as comfortable as possible. They also understand that there are security concerns around the WAMO site. They do not know who is coming, and won??™t know until the plane takes off.

Mary Loftin let us know that once the displaced citizens arrived they would be welcomed by a group of welcoming committee volunteers at the airport. Then any of them that needed immediate heath care would receive it at the airport. People would then be bussed by Tri-Met to the shelter at WAMO. Once they were settled into WAMO they would have access to health services and social workers. 

Rosie Sizer continued the briefing by letting the board know that the Portland Police were aware of security issues that they face with the shelter. The displaced citizens are going to need to have a sense of security after losing so much. There will be 24 hour security at WAMO with uniformed Portland Police Officers. They will set up a mobile command center at the high school and there will also be Bicycle Officers around the neighborhood. All precincts in the city will be working together to police the shelter. There has been some controversy with the fence that has been put up around the school, but it was put up to keep those that were inside safe and to keep the undesirable people in the neighborhood out.

CCHS HVAC NOISE

Paul Van Orden from the City Noise Inspectors Office gave a report to the board that CCHS is in compliance with city noise laws. He did note that CCHS has stated to him that they are not done making improvements to lessen the noise problem. Paul then took Chris Marston and Aron Homberg into the hallway for further discussion.

BRIDGEHEAD UPDATE

M'Lou Christ gave an update about the Burnside Bridgehead project. She also mentioned that the CAC for the bridgehead will be composed of 17 stakeholders.

NO WAKE ZONE

M'Lou Christ reported about the need to have a "No Wake Zone" in the Willamette River in the downtown corridor. This process will involve an application to the State Marine Board. Seann lead a motion for the BCA to back this project. Gilly Seconded. Vote Unanimous to back this safe boating zone.

BUCKMAN POOL UPDATE

Christine Yun updated everyone about the pool situation. The city gave $25,000 so that they pool could be more closely examined to see what the extent of the damage is. There will be further discussion next month. 

FOOT PATROL

Lily Witham wanted to let everyone know that she is the person to get a hold if they are interested in joining the foot patrol.

SE PRECINCT BICYCLE PATROL

The Southeast Precinct is trying to get a bicycle patrol up and running in the neighborhood, especially in the Hawthorne, Belmont and Burnside Business Districts and neighborhoods. Please let Chief Foxworth and Mayor Potter know that the neighborhood wants this to be a permanent program.
