I don't know if you've had the same problem, but the explosion in the deer population has really decimated my garden and even killed 3 trees on our property. They lounge all over my lawn, consider my shrubs to be their salad bar, and I've even found four of them (at the same time) lying down on my front porch. They're not even afraid of me and barely move their heads when I shout at them. I started to think that one day I'd see a group of them in the hot tub drinking beer!
I had our landscaper apply commercial deer repellant all last year. It worked, but only marginally and was very expensive. However, I think I found something that is actually effective. A friend of mine suggested it.
1 C of ground cayenne pepper
2 C vegetable oil (so it will stick)
6 raw eggs
2 C of ammonia
Just mix it up in a pressure sprayer and let it "brew" outside for a day. Then spray it around the periphery of your gardens. I actually sprayed it directly on my hostas, on the rosebushes and on the trunks of my trees too. It's been 4 weeks and they seem to be healthy, but it's probably better to stick to the periphery.... don't know yet.
The deer have been absent from my yard since I sprayed the mixture. Absent for a month.... and that's a huge change. I think I'll do it monthly and after it rains. Hope it works for you too.
