Neighborhood Grants
The Neighborhood Partnership Grant Program provides
grants to neighborhood and business associations, organ-
izations, or groups of residents for neighborhood improve-
ment projects. The applicants must provide a match in
services, cash, maintenance, voluntary effort, or supplies.
The applicant must also provide for ongoing maintenance
of the project and gather support from the neighborhood.
Applications for grants must provide a clear public benefit.
Previous applications have included neighborhood
improvement projects such as landscaping, identification
signs, neighborhood plans, research, surveys, and educa-
tion programs. Projects that are physical improvements
must be in right-of-ways or on public property. The appli-
cation must demonstrate neighborhood support, have the
consent of the adjacent property owners, and be a project
that can be permitted by federal, state, and local regulations.
Any necessary permits will be the responsibility of the
applicant. All applications are due, via U.S. Mail, hand
delivery or delivery service, to the City Hall Annex (440
2nd Ave. North) by 5:00 p.m., Friday, August 4, 2000.

Keep Kids Alive Drive 25
Keep Kids Alive Drive 25 is designed to encourage motorists
to observe the residential speed limit. In most towns and
cities across the U.S., the residential limit is 25 mph. Thus
the slogan, "Keep Kids Alive Drive 25." After one year
Keep Kids Alive Drive 25 has grown into a campaign with
contacts working on developing local initiatives in over 200
cities and towns representing 41 states. We are working to
grow Keep Kids Alive Drive 25 into a nationally recognized
campaign that simply calls all drivers to slow down in our
neighborhoods for our kids' sake. You can find more infor-
mation on their web site, www.keepkidsalive.com or call
402-334-1391 or email at eversont@gateway.net.

Presidents Report

Dear Neighbors,

Well, it looks like the drought may be over finally! I noticed that as I drove around the city, except for a green lawn here and there, most homes had brown lawns. It?’s obvious the people with the green lawns probably did not follow the water restriction set by the city. Maybe, before the next drought we might want to look at a water restriction plan for the whole city, which is fair to all residents. Unfortunately, this problem will continue to get worse as we continue to build on and pave over more land.

It looks like the Police Department is finally paying attention to what most of us have been saying for quite a while. Peter Bellimo, who was hired as a consultant, is looking into weather the department has enough officers to protect the city properly. He has been given the Neighborhood Association?’s concerns about the shortage of officers and we probably won't get a decision until September.

Have you checked CONA?’s Web site lately? The web site has most of the neighborhood meetings posted weekly. We would encourage all Neighborhoods to add their meeting times and any other important events to CONA?’s web site. The CONA site is getting close to the 1000 hits per month, which is very good. I?’ve had people from other states and countries email me asking for more information about our neighborhoods. The web site is a great communication tool that is getting more information out to a lot of people.

I hope you all have received your neighborhood grant application, if not please call Susie at the Neighborhood Partnership Department. The money is out there for those special projects that will improve your neighborhood. All it takes is filling out the application and getting it back before the August 4th dead line. If you need help filling out the application please come to the June 21st CONA Board Meeting. We have a group of people that have gone through the grant process and can help you with any question you may have.

As always it is a great to be president when you have so may volunteers doing a great job. Keep up the good work and I will see you at the June CONA Board Meeting.

Your neighbor, Jim Biggerstaff
