TAKE BACK THE SYSTEM: A CANDIDATE'S SEMINAR
Sponsored By
The League of Women Voters
of the St. Petersburg Area
August 5
The Poynter Institute for Media Studies
801 3rd Street South
The League of Women Voters has become increasingly
concerned with the growing apathy of the voting population.
In a project called "Take Back the System" the League has
planned various events to encourage citizens to become
informed and to take a more active role in the political
process. Since voters have made it clear that they are fed
up with politics as usual, the League is offering a way for
candidates to run an efficient and effective campaign that
will also raise the level and quality of political discourse.
The League believes that this seminar will demonstrate how
a candidate who wishes to be a public servant can run an
issue-oriented campaign that will excite the public an
promote better government. If you are interested in
attending or would like more information please call

CONA Board Meeting

Presidents Report
Dear Neighbors,
The 1st Vice President position is open. The current 1st Vice President, Brent Fisher, has announced his candidacy for public office and we wish him luck. If you are interested in this position please contact Teresa McEachen at 823-6390. The new 1st Vice President will take over immediately and serve until January.
At the July Board Meeting we will discuss a problem with interpretation of an association?’s by-laws VS the State Incorporation Rules. This issue has been raised recently in the North Shore Neighborhood Association. The North Shore Neighborhood Association decided that the State Incorporation Rules should take precedence over an association?’s by-laws when it comes to vote out a sitting President. According to these rules an Executive Board can relieve the President for NO CAUSE and can appoint a new President. The State Incorporation Rules give the Executive Board Members the authority on appointing a President and if Association Members disagree with the appointment their only recourse is to vote the Board Members out at yearly neighborhood association elections.
At last month?’s meeting I brought up Tampa Bay Area?’s 2012 Olympic Bid. Ed Turancik will be the main speaker at the July Board Meeting. Ed Turancik is the Chairman of the Board for the Tampa Bay Area?’s 2012 Olympic Bid and will inform us on what is happening with the Olympic Bid. I would encourage all Neighborhood Association Board Members to attend this meeting. This group claims that there is a fifty-fifty chance that we will see the Olympics in our area in 2012. If this is true, it is better we know now what to expect instead of later.
The CONA?’s web page on Neighborhoodlink.com continues to improve each month. Isn't it about time to get your neighborhood site up to date? Communication through Internet is the way of the future and all of our neighborhoods should be using this free information center now.
We have some ordinances, which CONA representatives help craft, coming before the City Council in the next couple of weeks. The ordinance on Probation Offices and Social Agencies should come before City Council at their next meeting. Unfortunately the ordinance on 25 MPH speed limit on residential streets is still held up by the Lawyers and hopefully will come up shortly. We all need to get out and voice our opinion on these Ordinances
