Traffic Map Help
The following text gives instructions on how to navigate to different traffic maps and information about what the different icons mean for events, traffic levels, and some miscellaneous icons and how to get more information when certain icons are displayed.

Map Navigation
If there are sub-view maps, you can go from one map to another using the "Map Navigation" graphic next to the top, left corner of the traffic map.

Moving your mouse over the boxes on the graphic will highlight the box and change the text above the map to show the area of the map that will be displayed if the box is clicked.

Event Icons
The traffic map can have many different event types being displayed on the map. If an event is being displayed on the map, place your mouse cursor over it to see a summary of the event. Click on the event to get more detailed information for it. The event types are incident, lane closure, emergency lane closure, special, congestion, advisory, and other events.

An incident event is displayed on the map as a blue triangle with an exclamation mark inside it. An incident event is defined as a non-recurring, unplanned event.

A SigAlert event is displayed on the map as a red triangle with an exclamation mark inside it. A SigAlert event is a severe traffic event that is causing significant traffic congestion.

Traffic Level Icons
The maps give an indication of how traffic is flowing on the roadway networks. Colored "dots" along side the the freeway lines indicate the traffic level at that location on the roadway. In cases where the current traffic level data is unavailable, a historical value may be displayed in its place. Historical values are an agragate of the traffic levels over time. Keep in mind that the historical values do not take into consideration current traffic events that may effect the actual traffic level. The freeway traffic levels are "Light", "Moderate", "Heavy", or "No Data".

A "Light" freeway traffic level is displayed on the map as a green circle and is defined as traffic that is free flowing (e.g., traffic that is flowing at 35 mph or above).

A "Light" historical freeway traffic level is displayed on the map as a green circle with a cross through it and is defined as traffic that is historically free flowing (e.g., traffic that is flowing at 35 mph or above).

A "Moderate" freeway traffic level is displayed on the map as a yellow circle with a black outline and is defined as traffic that is moderately congested (e.g., traffic that is flowing between 20 and 35 mph).

A "Moderate" historical freeway traffic level is displayed on the map as a yellow circle with a black outline and a cross through it and is defined as traffic that has historically moderate congestion (e.g., traffic that is flowing between 20 and 35 mph).

A "Heavy" freeway traffic level is displayed on the map as a red circle with a black dot in the middle and with a black outline and is defined as traffic that is heavily congested (e.g., traffic that is flowing at 20 mph or less).

A "Heavy" historical freeway traffic level is displayed on the map as a red circle with a cross through it and with a black outline and is defined as traffic that has historicaly heavy congestion (e.g., traffic that is flowing at 20 mph or less).

A "No Data" freeway traffic level is displayed on the map as a gray circle with a cross in the middle and is defined as a sensor that is currently not receiving data.

Miscellaneous Icons

A changeable message sign (CMS) is displayed on the traffic map as a red square with horizontal white lines in the middle of it. If a CMS is being displayed on the map, place your mouse cursor over it to see the message that is currently being displayed on it.

A camera is displayed on the traffic map as a black icon that looks similar to the top down view of a camera. If a camera is being displayed on the map, place your mouse cursor over it to see who is providing the camera feed and the location of the camera. Clicking on the camera will allow you to view streaming video, a camera snapshot, or camera snapshots that give the illusion of streaming video depending on the link that is selected.

Other picture icons may appear on the map, like icons for airports. Hover the mouse over the icon to see a description of what this icon represents. Clicking this icon will display further information in the browser window.
