BURGLARY PREVENTION TIPS . . . by Net Officer Gerry Lee

I have been reviewing the burglary and burglary from vehicle reports from the Cactus Village Neighborhood, (W. Cactus Rd. to W. Sweetwater Ave., N 43rd Ave to N 51st Ave.) for the months of December 2000 and January 2001. I found that 80 to 85% of these, the victims either left their houses unlocked, the garage doors opened and the cars unlocked with items in the car visible. The majority of the above could have been prevented if the victims had followed some simple prevention rules as listed below:

1. Keep house doors, windows and/or security screen doors locked.
2. Keep garage doors closed when not in the garage or where you can watch it.
3. Keep car doors locked and do not keep anything of value in the car where it is visible to someone walking by the car.
4. If you do not have a garage keep carport storage doors locked and cars locked when parked in the carport.
5. Use additional security locks and security measures on windows and arcadia floors, which are available at local home improvement and hardware stores.
6. Use adequate lighting around your house all night long. Low voltage lighting does not involve high costs to run.

Unfortunately someone will be the victim of a burglary or burglary from vehicle. The best way to prevent becoming a victim of a burglary of your house or car is to use common sense and the above listed tips. Keep in mind that there is no fool proof system to preventing the above crimes but by using the above tips you make it more difficult for the bad guy to make you a victim so that he will go somewhere else. . . ☻
