The purpose of the Mediation Program is to provide a way for people to resolve conflict peacefully and to reach a mutually satisfactory solution. Usually the dispute involves neighbors or other situations where people may continue to have contact. When a person contacts the Mediation Program, a case coordinator is assigned to work with the people to explore ways to approach the problem or conflict, and also, when needed, to find other community resources. They also schedule mediation sessions.

Mediation involves helping people resolve a problem or conflict. People in conflict have the opportunity to actively participate in a safe, non-threatening environment. In a mediation session each person explains the problem, what they want and what they are willing to do to resolve the problem. Two community mediators facilitate the process. Using mediation services is a good option for many reasons. Services are available at various times and locations throughout Phoenix. There is no cost for the services, and staff is usually able to provide information and begin services within a short period of time. Mediations are generally within two weeks and are available in English and Spanish.

Most importantly, unlike arbitration or the court system, the session with the goal of producing their own agreement, instead of having decisions made for them by others. After mediation, staff is available to provide additional assistance. Participants are also encouraged to contact the Mediation Program at any time in the future.
