Every year 65,000 bags worth of trash are removed from Phoenix area freeways alone. Officials from the Arizona Department of Transportation and the non-profit group Arizona Clean and Beautiful have announced a new Litter Hotline. Anyone who witnesses someone tossing trash from a vehicle can call in to the automated hotline with the license plate number, color, make and location of the violation. In the Phoenix area, the number is 602-712-4683. Outside the metro Phoenix area, call 1-877-354-8837.
Arizona currently spends about $2 million a year to clean up trash along the highway.
Once a call to the hotline is processed, Arizona Clean and Beautiful will attempt to prevent repeat occurrences by sending the vehicle owner a friendly letter reminding them that there are fines of up to $500 for littering. They?’ll also tuck a litterbag in with the letter. . . ☻
