Thinking about tackling a home improvement project? Decided the jobs too big for you to undertake yourself? The solution is to hire a contractor, but not just any contractor, but one that is licensed with the State of Arizona Registrar of Contractors.
The Registrar is the official licensing body for all residential and commercial contractors in Arizona. Residents who hire licensed contractors have recourse through the Registrar's Recovery Fund if something goes wrong and is available to help cover the costs of correcting faulty workmanship performed by a licensed contractor who is unable or unwilling to perform the necessary corrective work.
Consumers considering hiring a contractor can, at no charge, request information from the Registrar about any licensed contractor and to verify a contractor, and to verify whether the license is in good standing. The number to call is 602-542-1525 (24hrs). You can also find out if the contractor has a complaint history and if their license has been revoked or suspended.
Things to remember: Avoid door to door solicitors offering low cost services - do not allow them inside your door. Get at least three estimates. Ask for more than one reference. Ask for what type of protection the contractor provides i.e.; bonds, insurance, warranties. Ask for written verification. Obtain a written contract with the contractors license number, the services to be provided, the estimated cost, and estimated completion date. Do not allow a contractor to take you to a bank for payment and do not pay in cash.
Beware of con artists posing as licensed contractors. A band of seasonal con artists known as 'Travelers' visit Arizona yearly. They prey on elderly homeowners. They intimidate and use scare tactics to convince homeowners their homes need repairs. These con artists charge high fees, do shoddy work, if any at all, then vanish without a trace. They drive new trucks, go door to door, act very friendly and polite to gain your trust. If approached by one of these con artists, call the Registrars office immediately.
Remember, there is always time to contact the Registrar to verify a contractor. Do not allow a contractor to rush you into hiring him for any reason...☺
