Prevent Falls

Jul 10, 2003

Falls are the second leading cause of accidental death in the U.S. Only motor-vehicle accidents kill more people.

You can keep yourself and your family safer by becoming aware of potential hazards and trying a number of ways to fall-proof your home.

Bathroom: Skid-proof the tub and shower stall. Use a suction-type rubber mat or safety strips and decals in the tub or shower. Install grab bars. All bathtubs and shower stalls should be equipped with grab bars. Use only non-skid rugs.

Bedrooms: Have a lamp within reach of each bed. If this is not possible, put a flashlight on the table. Keep the pathway to the bathroom clear. Nightlights in the bathroom and hallway might be helpful especially for small children and the elderly.

Unsafe actions that result in falls are usually due to lack of knowledge, lack of skill and/or lack of physical condition. Medication can also be a factor. When you make good safety practices a habit, you reduce the- risk of falls. Make your home a safe place to live. . .☺
