AUGUST 18, 2009 BYLAWS VOTE

At the last general meeting, by a unanimous vote, CAN members voted that any member who lives or owns residential property within CAN?’s boundaries may vote in any election. To be eligible to vote, members must either have attended one of the last two general membership meetings or have provided documentary evidence, such as a driver?’s license, utility bill, voter?’s registration, or similar document, to the secretary to establish that they own residential property or live within CAN?’s boundaries. If you would like a current copy of the bylaws, contact Diane Mihalsky at
602-265-3511. We look forward to increased participation in future meetings and elections by our membership!

COMMUNITY ACTION OFFFICER JULIE SMITH

We learned about how we can avoid being victims of crime in our neighborhood at our August 18, 2009 meeting from our new Community Action Officer, Julie Smith, of the Phoenix Police Department Squaw Peak Precinct. If you missed the meeting or want to know more, you may contact Officer Smith on her cell phone at 602-361-4501 or by e-mail at julie.smith@phoenix.gov . Officer Smith also advised members that a quick and effective way to report vehicles that travel through our neighborhood at excessive speeds to the motor vehicle enforcement hotline, 602-534-SPED (602-534-7733).

FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS PARADE

The Festival of Lights Parade this year will be on December 5, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. The theme for this year?’s parade is ?“Going Green for the Holidays.?” Last year, Bruce Kern, Sharon Kern, Fred Rupert, and Denver Davis put together a ?“Frosty the Snowman Float.?” Diane, Bruce and his daughter Ali, Vicki Davis and her daughter Rachel, and Matt Carstons and his son Mason all had a good time being in the parade and waving at the crowds. If you have ideas, would like to help build our 2009 float, or would like otherwise to participate in the parade, please contact Bruce Kern at 602-377-5765.

DEMOLITION OF BUILDINGS AT NORTHEAST CORNER OF 3rd AVE. AND INDIAN SCHOOL

We have received many questions about the demolition of the Bekins storage building and the old A.J. Bayless strip center. The owner(s) applied for (and, as we have all seen, received) a demolition permit from the City. At this time, no development is proposed. Any new development likely will require rezoning and/or variances, which would require the developer to post public notice and go through a public hearing process. You may obtain additional information by contacting our newly reelected District 4 City Councilman Tom Simplot at 602-262-7447.
