SECURITY REPORT

May 02, 2009

Maybe some of you know we've had a rash of car thefts in the neighborhood. Besides removing the keys what else can the average person do to prevent their car from being stolen?

  1. Take Your Keys. Nearly 20 percent of all vehicles stolen have the keys in them.

  2. Lock Your Car. Approximately 50 percent of all vehicles stolen were left unlocked.

  3. Don't Leave Valuables in Plain View. Don't make your car a more desirable target and attract thieves by leaving valuables in plain site.

  4. Try to Avoid Parking on the Street Thieves don't want to come close to your house for fear of being seen and caught.

  5. If You Have a Garage, Use It. Clean it up and use it for your car rather than parking outside where your vehicle is more vulnerable.

  6. Lock the Garage Door and Your Vehicle. By locking both the garage and vehicle doors, the chances of deterring a thief greatly improve.

  7. Never Hide a Second Set of Keys in Your Car Extra keys can be easily found if a thief takes time.

  8. Park in Well-lighted Areas Over half of all vehicle thefts occur at night.

  9. Never Leave Your Car Running. Vehicles are stolen at convenience stores, gas stations, ATMs and on cold mornings when they?’re left running.

  10. Completely Close Car Windows. Don't make it easier for the thief to enter your vehicle.

  11. Don't Leave Registration or Title in the Car A car thief uses these to sell a stolen car. Keep title at home or office. Carry your registration on you.
  12. Disable Your Vehicle When Leaving if for an Extended Period. Remove the electronic ignition fuse, coil wire, or distributor rotor to disable it.

  13. Engrave Expensive Accessories. Engrave ID numbers on car stereos, cellular phones, etc., so they will have difficulty disposing of them.

    1. We've had a few security drivers "retire" from their service. We're so grateful for their assistance in keeping crime low (and our collective property values correspondingly higher)! We need new neighbors who can donate two hours a month for this activity.
