Frequently Forgotten Ordinances

No Cruising:  Permanent no-cruising zones are established by city ordinance. Cruising is defined as driving past a point traveling in the same direction, more than twice in any 2-hour period between the hours of 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. (Code 101-20.5). The Police department can establish temporary no-cruising zones wherever and whenever cruising is likely to become a problem.

Playing in Streets & Alleys:  Playing in steets or alleys is prohibited by state statute Section 340.01 (22).  In addition, play vehicles--defined a skateboards, roller skates, sleds, toboggans, and unicycles--may not be used on any street or alley except while crossing at the crosswalk (Section 346.78). The definition does not prohibit bicycles or in-line skates. In the City of Milwaukee Code 101-1 (Adoption of State Laws), the city has adopted the state sections.

Parking: No vehicle may be parked on city streets without a permit between the hours of 2 and 6 a.m. (Code 101-27).  Special parking restrictions exist on many streets.  These restrictions may not be posted.  Please call the Parking Information Desk at 286-8350 for information on a specific street.

Off-Street Parking:  Parking shall not be in the front yard or on grass.  Vehicles without license plates shall not be parked for more than 30 days at a residence.  The total number of motor vehicles parked outside a residence shall not exceed four.  On-street parking is not governed by this code. (Code 295-75)

Garbage Carts:  Owners and tenants shall return garbage carts to their proper storage locations before 10 p.m. on the day they are serviced. (Code 79-5) Note: older adults and diabled persons can arrange to have carts returned by sanitation workers.  Call the alderman's office.  State law prohibits putting grass clippings, branches and garden debris in the garbage.  Leave clippings on the lawn to decompose and nourish the soil, or compost them.  Or, take to a Self-Help Center.

Animals:  It is unlawful to allow any animal to be at large unlicensed, without supervision and control; no animal may be walked without provision for removal of litter.
