City Adopts Spay and Neuter Law

Mar 17, 1999

In an attempt to control the number of unwanted dogs and cats in the community, and to reduce the number of animals that are euthanized in local animal shelters, City Council approved an ordinance requiring ?“running-at-large?” and ?“vicious?” animals to be spayed or neutered or owners will face a $250 fine.
Councillors also decided to end mandatory licensing of all dogs. Saying that ownership can be determined from mandatory rabies tags, the City hopes to save time and money by ending a program that is essentially a duplication of services. Council also hopes to free up more time for animal control officers who spend a lot of time on licensing
issues and allow them to spend more time ?“on the streets?” interacting with the community.
