Crestwood Neighborhood

A Renovation Story: 2846 NW 19

Sep 18, 2005

Anyone driving down 19th street just east of May prior to June of this year probably wouldn?’t have noticed house numbered 2846. If they did notice it they probably would have just shaken their heads and thought that it was a shame that such a homely house was ruining the curb appeal of this block.

That was before Randy Sudderth came in to the picture. Randy has an eclectic resume that includes, among other things, home renovation. When he used to drive down 19th street he would think to himself that it was a ?“great street, but no one is doing anything with that house.?” With the help of the next door neighbors Randy was able to contact the owners and convince them to sell the house to him. What happened next is something worthy of an episode of ?“Extreme Makeover: Home Edition?”

New paint throughout, refinished floors, new bathroom fixtures, new cabinet hardware, new light fixtures, central heat and air, driveway replacement, new windows throughout, nearly everything in and around the house has been renovated or replaced.

The most noticeable changes are to the face of the house. One of the things Randy knew had to be changed was the ?“flat front?” of the house. While other Crestwood houses have porches or recessed areas to add depth to the front of the house this house had nothing. Randy considered an arbor, but could never quite ?“wrap his mind around what it would look like?”. Instead he landscaped a flower garden, made shutters and installed window boxes that he found at the nearby Gardengate Antiques on May Avenue. He also re-painted the brick and installed a new front door. The window panels in the front door allow passers by a peek in to the front room and create a sense of welcome and warmth.

Speaking of warmth, Randy took a cramped kitchen and opened up the space to create a welcoming gathering place. He took out the top half of the wall dividing the kitchen/dining room and installed a counter-top. The kitchen had plank floors as opposed to the standard oak flooring in the rest of the house. He painted the kitchen floor barn red. When I visited the house the kitchen was very much still a work in progress with no appliances and some cabinet work still to be done, but the cozy red floors created the sense of a country kitchen with a pie in the oven.

Randy hopes to have this house on the market by the end of July. He has purchased another home on the ?“other side?” of 16th street in Miller, and is interested in more Crestwood renovations. With what he has done to the house at 2846 NW 19th we certainly hope he is able to update more Crestwood homes.

Randy?’s business is Randy Sudderth Renovations and he can be contacted at 250-4454.
