This and more information about trash and recycling
can be found on the city of Indianapolis website. For any
questions or problems with your normal or heavy trash day, report your problem online through the Mayor?’s Action Center (http://www.indygov.org/mac/) or call (317) 327-4MAC.
TRASH
Each household has a 10 bag/container limit per pick up. Make sure your trash is placed at the curb by 7 a.m. Friday. Place your trash right next to the curb so your trash collector does not need to enter your property.
Put your trash in proper containers including plastic bags and 5- to 32-gallon metal or plastic cans. If you use plastic bags, please leave a ?“handle?” at the top so the hauler can pick up the bag. And make sure your cans have handles and lids. Corrugated containers, cardboard boxes or torn plastic bags are not proper containers. You also can bag your trash and put it in 90-gallon ?“toters?”; however, one ?“toter?” counts as 3 containers.
For safety/health reasons, these items will not be picked up:
?• Building materials like drywall, roofing, brick, and wood;
?• Trees, large tree limbs, tree stumps, sod or fill dirt;
?• Explosives, pathological and biological waste, radioactive material, ashes, and sand;
?• Automotive parts including batteries; and
?• Human and animal waste (diapers & kitty litter are OK).
HEAVY TRASH
When you get a new couch or dishwasher, you need a way to dispose of the old one. That's why the city has heavy trash pick up. Our heavy trash is our regular pick up day, Friday, and each house may put out 2 heavy trash items per month.
Heavy trash includes household furnishings, appliances, tires with rims and bicycles. Swingsets will be taken if they are disassembled. Refrigerators, air conditioners and other items containing freon require special handling. Please call 327-4MAC for more information.
TOX DROPS
Everyday, we use cleaners, paints and batteries. Although these household items are very useful in our homes, they can be hazardous if thrown away or poured down the drain. You can dispose of these items safely through the Tox Drops program. Call 327-4TOX to find out where you can dispose of these items.
Here are a few of the items considered to be hazardous waste:
?• Automotive products and fluids;
?• Cleaners and polishers;
?• Batteries - both car and household types;
?• Paints and solvents;
?• Herbicides and some pesticides; and
?• Photographic and swimming pool chemicals.
RECYCLING
Recycling saves energy, reduces pollution, and preserves valuable natural resources with little effort on your part. There are drop-off sites at K-Mart on 86th and Michigan and at Marsh on 86th and Ditch or you can contact Ray?’s Recycling (539-2024) and get curbside pickup for about $36 a year. You can recycle glass (brown, green, clear), aluminum and steel food and beverage cans, PET and HDPE plastics (imprinted on the bottom with a ?“1?” or ?“2?” inside a recycling triangle) and newspapers.
