Crown Colony was conceived and sprung up in the late 1960’s. We experienced rapid growth in the 1970s and continued steadily into the 1980s. Several homes were built in just the last 10 to 15 years. Currently, we are down to only a couple of lots left.
The Paul Harding High School and Southwick Elementary schools were also built when Crown Colony was beginning to grow.
From the very beginning, there was a Crown Colony Club that was responsible for a club house, pool, playground, and tennis courts located at the back of the addition. If a new resident had a home built in the addition, the owners qualified for an automatic membership in the “Club” However, unfortunately, the Crown Colony Club experienced problems; the main one was financial. The keys to the clubhouse was turned over to the Crown Colony Association Board, which also started at the outset of Crown Colony. Volunteers continued the pool operation and rented out the club house to help off set expenses. However, the challenges became insurmountable. iIt was decided that the New Haven Parks Dept would buy it at the tax sale. Plans were changed when an out of state investor out bid the representative from New Haven, and the club house and the surrounding property were out of our hands completely. It eventually became purchased by the church that is currently using it. We are glad that it was not a night club that bought it!

The Crown Colony Association Board consists of the President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer and six faithful directors. We have 4 scheduled open board meetings each year, and special meetings if circumstances call for them. All residents are encouraged to attend the Annual Meeting which is held each fall in October. Newsletters and entrance signs are used to communicate to the home owners. We now have this web site also, which we hope will be used more in the future. It will be easier to use for relating back and forth between the board, residents, other communities, city and potential home buyers.
Our mandatory dues are currently set at $30 per year per household, which is much lower than most other additions. Dues became mandatory in 1992 when a petition was passed around and 65% of the residents were desirous to have the dues become mandatory in order to provide more adequately for maintenance of Crown Colony. With these dues we hire a company to plow open the streets when we have snow, (we are last on the city’s list to get plowed open). They also mow and maintain the entrances. We update and pay for repairs for the entrances, purchase posters for the communication signs, and pay for newsletter expenses. Also, in the past we have had block parties, and community get-to-gethers. Currently, we are paying an attorney to help us with the placing of liens on properties that have past due dues. Our fiscal year runs from Jan to December. Dues are due and payable 28 days from billing for the current year.
The future for Crown Colony looks very bright. With the turn-around at the near-by mall, the new Menards Store, the Super Wal-Mart, the Police and Fire Academy that is being built, and much more to come, all help to finally change the old image of our area that we’ve been battling for so long. Property values are going up. More and new residents are seeking to reside here and Southside Pride is beginning to swell once again.
Crown Colony boasts of homes that sell anywhere from $70,000 to over $100,000 We have wonderful sidewalks, trees and homeowners. We organize an annual addition-wide garage sale, and are planning to have more social functions for residents in the future. By the way, did you know that our City Council representative, lives in our addition ?
