ANNUAL MEETING

January 22, 2011

 

The second annual meeting of the Des Moines Historical Society was held January 22, 2011 at the Spaghetti Works on Court Avenue.  The program included information about the various Polk County Courthouses since 1846. 

 

President Pat Meiners reported on the State of the Society, and activities of the DMHS during 2010.  The quarterly DMHS meetings have covered the topics of Court Avenue, The South Side,   Historical Entertainment and Amusement, and the East Village by Sarah Oltrogge.  This year the DMHS led in the commemoration of the Centennial of the current Des Moines City Hall (Municipal Building).  The President also conducted a bus tour of historical sites around downtown and the East Village for the Greater Des Moines Leadership Institute and has been on WHO-TV 13 with Andy Fales relating information about famous Des Moines residents, and helped Aaron Brilbeck with a report about a ‘Cold Case’ from 1922.  To help acquaint the city residents with the DMHS, a tree was decorated for the Festival of Trees and Lights, and a 1931 Model A pick-up truck was in the BeaverFest Parade.  Natasha Moore represented the DMHS at the Iowa Museum Association Annual Meeting. 

 

The elections results were: Pat Meiners, President; Natasha Moore, Vice President; Rick Meiners, Secretary; Ted Lussem, Treasurer; and David Coates, Karen Hanley, Sarah Oltrogge, Tim Payne, and Jacob Shoemaker, Board Members.

At:         5th St. and Euclid Av.,

Des Moines

v  Beginning at 6:00, the program will detail the stories behind the names of many of the streets in Des Moines. 

v  Non-members are welcome.

v  The business meeting will begin about 6:45 and last until 7:45. 

v  Members will receive the gift of an 1890 DM map from Karen Hanley

                                                                               

 

QUARTERLY

‘MEMBERS ONLY’ EVENT

 

Saturday, May 14, 2011 a special session to learn how to conduct research will be held at the State Historical Library from 10:00 – NOON.  This is for dues-paying members only.

You will learn to use the resources at the library and receive personal research help.  The SPACE IS LIMITED, so please call Rick Meiners at 278??‘1234 or email a1hawkeye@juno.com

ABOUT THE DES MOINES HISTORICAL SOCIETY

The Des Moines Historical Society of Des Moines, Iowa held its’ organizational meeting Sunday, September 27, 2009 at the Des Moines Birthplace/Fort Des Moines II Memorial Cabin.  Article II of the bylaws defines:  “The purpose of the DMHS is to promote the preservation and study of the history and heritage of Des Moines, Iowa.”

DMHS meetings and activities include:

  • § 3rd QUARTER MEETING - Sunday, July 24, 2011 (tentatively) topic: DM during the Civil War & Camp Burnside   –   Program at 1:00, meeting about 2:00; Redhead Park, E. 18th St. & Dean Avenue. 

Bring a lawn chair and picnic meal if you wish, drinks and cookies provided.

  • § Television Interviews about famous citizens and other topics, and group presentations. 
  • § June 2010 Centennial of the DM Municipal Bldg. Celebration and filling the next City Hall Time Capsule
  • § Special Quarterly ‘Members Only’ Events; i.e. Learning to research and special tours.

The DMHS is working toward:

  • § Getting the community involved in DM history
  • § Holding quarterly meetings presenting topics relevant to the history of Des Moines
