Par-TAY peeeeeeeople, drag queens and hedonistic seekers, direct from Fiesta blog central here at mySA.com, comes this news flash: It's time to party down with Sheryl Sculley.
That's right our city manager will be managing a group of other characters at this year's Cornyation as King ??” yes, King Anchovy XLIV in the Court of the Fancy Flying Footwear (remember when an Iraqi reporter threw his shoe at President George Bush?).
Cornyation, of course, is the adult burlesque variety show that lampoons pop culture's most infamous personalities and politicians, local and national. Tickets to "the raunchiest, cheapest event of Fiesta" ??” as the show officially bills itself ??” go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday at the Majestic/Empire box office, at the Fiesta Commission offices on Broadway and at 11 a.m. at Ticketmaster. (For more information, go to www.Cornyation.org.)
From Octomom's newsmaking motherhood to Michael Phelps' bong-holding incident, nothing will be held sacred at this year's farcical extravaganza at the Charlene McCombs Empire Theatre. Shows are slated for 8 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. on April 21, 22 and 23.
King Anchovy XXXVIII Bart Nichols makes his grand entrance at Cornyation in 2003.
Ray Chavez, the mastermind behind the annual madcap show said that Sculley will be the third female ruler and sovereign head of Cornyation; past women have been City Councilwoman Debra Guerrero and Elaine Wolf, editor of the San Antonio Current.
Chavez said he met Sculley three years ago at a Cornyation cast party and mentioned she'd like to be king. So Chavez took her up on it and she agreed, knowing that she'll introduce the nightly show with a skit and dance routine while wearing an outlandish outfit.
Chavez is now hoping to "find a mayoral candidate for the show" and possibly a San Antonio police officer for another skit. In all, 14 skits will be performed, including one about Olympic gold medalist Phelps from the Court of Kelloggs' Wasted Flakes, another from the Court of Debbie Does Digital (in a skit about the digital switchover) and another from the Court of the Queen of Desperate Hoofwives (in a routine about pompadours, prairie frocks and all things 'pigligamist').
An official Fiesta event, Cornyation, traced back to 1951, is one of the most popular during the citywide celebration's 11 days of nonstop partying. Since becoming a non-profit organization, Cornyation has donated more than $500,000 to local charities such as SAAF (San Antonio AIDS Foundation), Beat AIDS (Black Effort Against the Threat of AIDS), Help Action Care (HAC) and Jennifer's Camp (AARC).
