Mr. James A. Johnson was honored on June 13, 2013. The program read as follows: a resident since 1966, Mr. Johnson has led the Driving Park Civic Association for over thirty years. Additionally Mr. Johnson served as the president of the Driving Park Area Commission for many years and was the founder of the first Block Watch in the city of Columbus, an honor recognized by an award presented to him by President William J. Clinton in 1994. The ability for families, neighbors and business owners to live, work and play in a crime free community has been Mr. Johnson's focus for many years and it has paid off. Today Driving Park is safe, clean and thriving. Continuing with his theme of safe streets, Mr. Johnson founded the first Police Community Relations Committee in 1980, which was followed by the first Youth Against Crime Rally in 1981. Mr. Johnson is the recipient of over eighty awards, including those awards celebrating his service in the United States military and various other community organizations.
The keynote speaker was Council Member Hearcel Craig who presented Mr. Johnson with an award from City Council. Also attending was House Democratic Leader Tracy Maxwell Heard who presented him with an Honor from Govenor Kasich. Mrs. Donna Gray Boyd was also present and honored him with Rainbow Wishes, a distinquished military honor. She invited all the veterans present to join Mr. Johnson for a special of those who have served our country.
