Eastside Neighborhood Notes

This past November we had the first combined neighborhood clean up; code preservation, graffiti task force, police department and site II weed and seeding effort on November 3rd. We had a literature display at 625 S. Cypress, the mobile police motor home. We had the use of police department Golf Carts for Code Preservation Officers to use as they went throughout our alleyways. There were five roll off bins through out Eastside, and the Police Department placed one in an alley. They used a large truck to transport more rubbish to the City yard trash bin. The graffiti t5ask force painted out approximately 26,000 square feet of graffiti. Code preservation issued 31 citations including an illegal car storage lot, and a car for sale on private property. Victor Madrigal was able to ask one of our city's agencies to remove the 16 pairs of tennis shoes from the lines crossing Oak at Chestnut.

Code preservation will be coming to the Eastside area in? January or February. There will be a special task force of three preservation officers. They will go door-to-door looking for any and all violations. They will be issuing notices of violation. If you do not correct the violation it could lead to $100.00 fine, followed by a $200.00, then a $500.00 fine. If you still haven't corrected the violation it will now turned over to the city attorneys office for prosecution. Remember to take down your icicle lights by January 31,2002.

Our Holiday Potluck was a big success. We were honored with the presence of Police Captain Carlson. He gave coffee cups promoting the upcoming Police and Fireman games to those in attendance. Lt. Magdalena and many of the Police Officers joined us as well. Officer Mark Bell and Rebuilding Together President-Cy Baumann had a nice chat regarding the upcoming LA Marathon they will both be running in. They also compared past runs.

There was a present for each resident address represented, and the food was delicious.

Leonard Holmberg was a wonderful surprise. He was able to make it at the last minute with his portable piano keyboard. If you were not with us, you missed some very beautiful music. Micky Welle's son Joe and Granddaughter Deanna were among those celebrating. We were joined by the new CO-chair of South Eastside, Jose Rea. He will share the chair duties with Amalia.
