Des Moines' Sidewalk Ordinance

Homeowners are responsible for maintaining the sidewalk(s) adjacent to their property. See the City link below for details.

Get Help Paying for Sidewalk Repair.

The City’s “Special Assessment Subsidy Program” was adopted by the City Council to assist low and moderate-income homeowners in paying assessments in conjunction with sidewalk repair or replacement. The program pays the entire assessment for eligible households. For example, qualifying families include a family of four with an adjusted annual income of $53,500 and a single-person household with an adjusted annual income of $37,450. You must apply for Special Assessment Subsidy within 30 days of the date of the Notice to Repair Sidewalk. See the City link below for details.
