Foster-Powell Neighborhood Association

April 2000 Newsletter

Jul 02, 2000

Dear Neighbors,

May is almost here, and with it comes the neighborhood elections. Be sure to come to the next meeting to cast your vote for next year?’s officers, or perhaps to run for office.

Crime
The focus of our last meeting, was on neighborhood crime.

Officer Chris Davis from East Precinct, and Rhetta Deason, our Neighborhood Crime Specialist, came to talk with us about our crime issues. Rhetta announced opportunities for Foot Patrol training on Tuesday, May 9, at Southeast Uplift from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., and on May 17 at East Precinct. The biggest problems in our neighborhood are vehicle vandalism and theft, particularly tire slashing.

Police are implementing additional patrols in our neighborhood in both marked and unmarked cars. We can?’t stress enough how important it is to call in every single incident, even if you feel the officer taking the report is non-responsive. Officer Davis said he would pass on concerns that BOAC has acted rudely to callers. Our police support is based on statistics. Neighbors urged to call in all crimes and to call in suspicious persons.

Fence Around Pioneer Cemetery
This project is progressing. It will be a joint project between Metro and PDC, under the auspices of Lents Urban Renewal. Carol Hertzberg spoke from PDC. Upcoming meetings discussing the fence project will be held the 2nd Tuesday of the month, from 7-9 p.m. at 5105 SE 97th, at Lents Elementary School. Exceptions are the months of April, July, October, and January. Design options will be reviewed at the May 9 meeting, or at the June meeting. Funds are available to build the fence from July 1, 00 ?– July 1, 01, so the construction time may be late summer, fall, or later yet. The garbage problem at the nearby bus stop was discussed. PDC was asked to add their voice to ours to ask Walgreen?’s to commit to adopt the bus stop.

OLCC Issues
Reds Bar & Grill has requested a change of location to the old Pizza Hut location on 70th and Foster. It is looking like there will be a change of businesses at the old Organ Grinder location ?– stay tuned. For more information, come to the May meeting. Annual liquor license renewals are up soon. OLCC would like information on problem locations by April 15, but I don?’t think it is too late to bring it to their attention if you know of a problem.

Miscellaneous
The Portland Bureau of Buildings will be working with the Foster Target area, and will be making an inspector available to check on nuisance rental properties for safety compliance.

Meetings are always on the FIRST Tuesday of each month from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., at the St. Anthony Parish Hall, 3618 SE 79th (green and white building at south end of the complex-please use the east door). Call Cindy Peek at 775-3006 for more information, or e-mail me at clpeek@aol.com.
