.Keep your backyard gate locked at all times.? Install a locked gate on a side driveway to eliminate alley to front yard pedestrian traffic.
.Own any sized dog to watch your property and alert you when strangers approach.? Always have your dog with your children when they are playing in a backyard with a locked gate.
.Never open your door to strangers.? Do let strangers know that you are home, and the house is not empty.? In a loud voice,? tell ?“George?” that you are checking the front door, even if George is not there with you. If you believe someone is breaking into your home,? yell in a loud voice, "George,? get the gun and call the police."?
.When out of town, either stop mail and paper delivery, or have a neighbor pick up the mail and newspaper, as well as advertising handbills, shortly after delivery.
.When out of town, place indoor lights on a timer to maintain an ?“at home?” appearance from the street.
.When out of town, forward calls to a live person to answer your phone while you are away.? (You can even forward your home phone to your cell phone.) A working answering machine is the next-best method.
.Always close your garage door when working in the front or back yard.
.Never leave any item in your car viewable from car windows.? A bag of trash can look like a bag of treasure to a thief. Do not add high-dollar after-market sound systems or wheels to your vehicle.?
.Install a monitored burglar alarm with a loud outside siren to alert your neighbors when your house is broken into.? Use the panic feature on your alarm to trigger the outside alarm whenever you suspect a prowler is on your property or in your home.? A permit is NOT REQUIRED for an outside alarm.
.When away from home,? hide all keys to cars that are left in the garage or driveway.?
