Lunch on the Lawn/Dinner in the Park Offers Sponsorships

Free outdoor concerts at Civic Center Park in the Golden Triangle are right around the corner as winter winds down. This year Councilman Ed Thomas' Lunch on the Lawn/Dinner in the Park performance series has increased its concerts to eight. Four lunchtime concerts (noon-1:30) are every Wednesday in June, and the evening concerts (7:30-9:30) will happen on June 28 and July 5, 12, and 19.

We are proud to announce that Humphries Poli Architects will be the presenter of one of our evening concerts along with support from the Mayor's Office of Art, Culture, and Film and Capitol Hill United Neighborhoods, Inc. We have many sponsorship levels with a new category this year of "Friends." For only $150.00 your name will be listed as a supporter of this popular series.

This is a great opportunity to support local talent, and the Golden Triangle benefits by having free outdoor concerts right in our own backyard. The Greek Amphitheater has got to be one of the best intimate venues for performers in the city. So please step up to the bat and help keep these concerts alive and well.

St. John's Children's Center

Day care is a problem most working parents face. I found my solution at St. John's Children's Center and would like to tell you about this high-quality child care center. St. John's has been located at 10th and Acoma since 1989 and has been a long-time contributor to the vitality of the Golden Triangle Neighborhood. St. John's is a non-profit, nondenominational, parent run day care.

As many people are aware, this winter and spring the center faced an enrollment and capital funding crisis. Rumors persist of our demise. But the new parent board is doing everything it can to bring the center out of this crisis and has made significant strides in bringing the center back to being a fantastic day care that is working hard to meet and exceed the needs of today's parents.

The center is an important enhancement to the neighborhood. It strongly believes in providing a wonderful, caring environment where children of all backgrounds can play and learn together. The location is ideal for the many people who work nearby.

Around the Neighborhood

The Colorado Historical Society hosted a delightful neighborhood networking on February 17 at their museum. The highlight was a tour of the exhibit Then and Now 1870-2000: The Jackson/Fielder Photos with some insights by the museum's curator of photography, Eric Paddock. Thank you to Director Georgiana Contiguglia and her staff.

A groundbreaking ceremony for The Prado condominium development was held on February 5 on the site at 11th and Cherokee. Many of the future residents sipped mimosas while a backhoe scooped the first slabs of aging asphalt. The old Coolidge Hotel at the corner has since been razed in preparation for the construction.

Congratulations to Rex Brown and the faculty, staff, and students of PSI Charter School for the renewal of their charter, for celebrating their fifth year of operation (all in The Golden Triangle), and for the well deserved compliments in a recent Denver Post editorial which said the school is a place where kids flourish.

The Golden Triangle Neighborhood Association now had 200 members. Pierson Graphics/Maps Unlimited, a long-time Golden Triangle business, has a new name, MAPSCO Map and Travel Center. The Colorado Institute of art has recently changed its name to The Art Institute of Colorado.

The Denver Foundation for Architecture conducts tours of the built environment, including one tour of the Golden Triangle, each summer. During March and April they will be offering architectural education sessions, which are open to the public, for the purpose of training tour docents. The Rocky Mountain Digital Arts Center is a new educational facility in the neighborhood combining state-of-the-art technology with a wide array of instructor expertise to help students move effectively into any aspect of the digital arts revolution.

The Denver Art Museum Cinema returns to The Acoma Center for its spring 2000 film series, East Meets West: The Films of Akira Kurosawa, a retrospective honoring the celebrated Japanese director. Call 720.913.0105 for film titles, dates, and tickets information.
