AROUND THE NEIGHBORHOOD

Feb 09, 1999

The Good Neighbor Committee hosted a holiday party at Cherokee Dining on 12th Avenue in December which was a smashing success. More than 60 people enjoyed the good company, the food and drink, the ambience, and the restaurant''s lavish holiday decor. The party will surely become an annual event.

Business owners, residents, and property owners who are interested in the enhancement of the Golden Triangle as an urban village will find interesting reading in the book City Comforts by David Sucher It is filled with practical ideas?‹some are very simple ones?‹for creating a pedestrian oriented, exciting urban environment on a human scale. Janis Frame, owner of Book Buffs Ltd. at 1307 Bannock, has donated 10 copies of City Comforts to GTNA to lend. She will also sell copies from her store at cost (a 40 percent discount) plus tax. Call the GTNA office (303-572-0506) if you would like to borrow the book or Book Buffs (303-534-1919) for your own copy.

Welcome to six new and newish Golden Triangle businesses. Frank Lavin owns West Design an interior design business and art gallery. Carol Singer''s insurance business is affiliated with Farmers Insurance Group of Companies. Animal Crackers is an art framing business owned by Andrew Stemple. Wardrobe Works is a reseller of fine clothing owned by Robyn Wackerli. Lori Nelson and her husband Clark Thomas recently opened Indigos, an art gallery. Most recently a restaurant, Radex, has been opened by Radeck Cherney. Each of these fine businesses is a welcome addition to our urban village.

In late December the Denver Post featured The Year''s Best art, theater, films, dance, television, and music in metro Denver. In the category of art, critic Jeff Bradley stated that "three districts solidified their hold on the action: LoDo, Cherry Creek North and the Golden Triangle." He went on to list 15 gallery shows which made the biggest impression during 1998. Four of them were Golden Triangle shows: "Contemporary impressionist John K. Harrell''s rainy scenes and florals at Abend Gallery in April . . . Nat Youngblood''s atmospheric ?ŒRain Dance'' in Artists of America at the Colorado History Museum in September . . . Philippe Halsman''s searing photo of Albert Einstein and other Masterworks'' at Camera Obscura Gallery in October" and "The Renaissance qualities of Ron Hicks'' paintings at the David Uhl Gallery in November." In the theater category, critic Sandra Brooks-Dillard cited 12 impressive productions during 1998. One of them was LaRonde, a comic drama directed by GTNA member Len Kiziuk and presented by his Way of the World Productions at the Acoma Center. In the rock concert category, critic Mark Harden listed the year''s most memorable performances. One of them was Susan Tedeschi at the Denver Blues Festival held annually in the Golden Triangle. In the dance category, critic Glenn Giffin featured the Colorado Ballet''s performance of Martha Graham''s Applacian Spring in October. Colorado Ballet is also a GTNA member located in the Golden Triangle.

The Denver Public Schools will conduct site visits at one-third of the district''s schools as part of their ongoing effort to improve student achievement and to meet state accreditation standards. Teams composed of parents, community members, teachers, administrators, and others will visit each selected school for an evening and the following day with specific tasks to accomplish at each visit. The district would like to have a representative from the GTNA to serve on a team between February 22 and March 2. If you would like to participate or wish to have further details, call Sherry Eastlund at 303-764-3887.
