Goldie has been visiting a gem in our neighborhood and wants you to know about the outstanding features of PSI Charter School. You have probably seen youth loping along between the bus stop on Broadway and PSI in the old Rocky Mountain Bank Note building at 11th and Delaware. These talented students have made a choice to attend school in our neighborhood because they want the urban learning experience PSI offers. The school's mission is to enrich life in the urban core of Denver-to add to its attractiveness, increase its economic viability, enliven its cultural life, and bring out its hospitality. PSI will make its contributions to this mission by enabling young people to work together as a learning community on challenging projects that make a difference in the quality of city life and in the process draw students toward higher and higher standards of character, conduct, work, academic achievement, and community service.
Have you seen a student participating in a mentor/internship activity in a local business? Probably a PSI student. Have you read the Haiku engraved in the sidewalks along Acoma, leading to the new library and art museum? PSI students being creative again. Did you know you can use meeting space at the school? PSI being a good neighbor.
The school currently has an AmeriCorp Promise Fellow through Colorado Youth at Risk and PSI Charter School. He is Gabe Meyer, and he is creating partnerships in our community that give students fundamental resources for success. He is working hard on some special projects in addition to participating in all school activities. Gabe's priority projects are an after-school program, a school lunch program, and community service projects in our parks. The after-school project offers students growth opportunities in a variety of settings. Your interest in helping out could be served by sharing your time or skills in hosting a chess team, teaching a musical instrument, teaching board or card games, or any other creative skills you want to share. You can also offer a business mentoring or internship position to a youth who will learn about your business and the world of work skills we all need to develop. The school lunch program partners food-based businesses in our neighborhood with the school to provide nutrition to youth. You can sponsor meals financially, you can pick up food, serve food, and clean up. You can volunteer to manage the parent volunteers in the lunch program who would do the serving and clean up.
You can use any of your creative skills or interest at the school if you want to take advantage of the volunteer opportunities they have to offer. You can call Gabe at 303-575-6690, ext. 235 if you want the list of volunteer opportunities they have, or if you want to try any of the activities mentioned above. You can also call Gabe if you want to use volunteer resources from the school. You will likely contribute to the fundamental resources that are so important to youth. These fundamental resources are on ongoing relationship with a caring adult, a safe place for non-school hours, a healthy start, marketable skills, and an opportunity to give back to the community.
Truly, PSI gives back to the Golden Triangle.
