Newsletter of The Greater Bartlett Council of Neighborhood Associations
President, Pete Martin
Volume 1, Issue 1 February 2007
____________________________________________________________________________
To all our Bartlett neighbors,
The Board of the Greater Bartlett Council of Neighborhood Associations (GBC) wishes you all the best for 2007. You have received a copy of this letter as the person of record who represents your homeowner?’s association or neighborhood watch. If you are no longer the point of contact for your association, please pass this letter to that individual. With the help of the City of Bartlett we plan to publish a quarterly newsletter that will inform you and your neighborhood of upcoming council events. Events will also be posted in the Bartlett Express and the GBC website (see below).
As you know, the GBC was formed in January 2006 to act as a collective voice of Bartlett neighborhood associations and neighborhood watch associations. The purpose of the organization is to represent all of greater Bartlett when interacting with our elected representatives and city management on issues such as city safety, planning, and development. We had a very successful start-up year in 2006. Our meetings included presentations by: Mayors Wharton and McDonald; officers of the Bartlett Police Department discussed gang issues in the greater Memphis area; and the past President of the Germantown Homeowners Association, discussed ways of building and maintaining an effective homeowners council. We established a website, provided assistance to neighborhoods in preparing for National Night Out celebrations, and in July we sponsored a ?“meet your county candidates?” forum that was held at the Bartlett Performing Arts Center.
As you can see the council is working very hard to provide Bartlett citizens a mechanism to increase communication and collaboration throughout our fine city. As Bartlett continues to grow these efforts become even more important. We need your help and involvement. On the reverse side of this letter you will find the meetings times and dates for 2007. All meetings take place at the Bartlett Library at 7 PM. Our first meeting is February 20th. We will elect officers and quickly move to presentations by Mayor McDonald and the Alderman. After a question and answer session, you will have an opportunity to meet your representatives one-on-one.
We would very much like to have new members on our board for 2007. If you are interested in serving on our board or an action committee, please contact me by phone or email. In the event that no new nominees are identified, each of the current board members has agreed to continue through 2007, if approved at the February meeting. You can find the proposed slate of officers on the reverse side of this letter.
In closing, I look forward to another great year and seeing all of you at the meetings. As Ray Croc, the founder of McDonalds liked to say ?“none of us is as good as all of us?”.
Regards, Pete Martin

Volunteers Needed
For Emergency Response Training
The Bartlett Fire Department continues to train citizens in basic skills (CERT) required in the case of a local civic emergency, e.g. earthquake. If you would like to know more about this worthwhile program and dates for training, please contact Assistant Chief Danny Baxter, 385-5536, dbaxter@cityofbartlett.org.
Dues to be Discussed In April
Throughout the year the GBC experiences a number of expenses. Though not large, up to this point the costs have been bourn by members of the board. Absent monetary support by the city of Bartlett, it is imperative that another way to cover the costs of operating the council be found. To this end, we shall discuss during the April GBC the issue of assessing each member organization a yearly fee or dues. Please come prepared to discuss the issue and any alternative ways of raising money.
