Jan. 8 GENA monthly meeting at Englewood High School, Media Room, 7:00 PM. This is as early in the month as a meeting can occur. Lets start the new year right for continued success. Our guest speaker will be Ms. Valerie Williams from the Jacksonville Economic Development Commission. It's important that we understand the problems of our business community and help form a better relationship with them. By being informed we can help bring to Englewood a better mix of business to serve our citizens.
Jan. 22 Southeast Citizens Planning Advisory Committee meeting, Southeast Branch Library, community room 136 A & B. Visitors are welcome. You can learn a lot about getting things done by the City agencies. You can talk to city officers face to face. Lowell Griffith is the GENA representative at these meetings and Robert Chadwick is the alternate.
Feb. 12 GENA monthly meeting at Englewood High School, 7:00 PM.

Yard of the Month Excerpts from stories by GENA members (more on back page)"From the desk of Criquette Goodson" ?…'We bought our home in 1951 - the first home in the subdivision. Across the street from us were trees, trees and more trees. This was considered "country" although we were hooked up to city sewerage. Copper Circle East was the bus route and many neighbors (years later) used to stand in our carport to wait for the bus. My children picked blackberries in the woods close to Philips Hwy.

What you GENA members have done in 2000 symbol 151 \f "Times New Roman Special G1" \s 10?—GENA's number one priority, Cuba Hunter Park is slated for construction. Eighteen acres to be enjoyed by all ages. We look forward to the Senior Center, the multi-use ball fields and the nature trail through the wetlands.Although we did not reach our Beautification Grant Goal, we did find misapplied money within our budget. Our beautification project is predicated on the City completing the Spring Park Road project, which means that we have time to reach our goal this year.We have worked closely with our City Councilwoman, Suzanne Jenkins, JaxPride and JEA to make Englewood a more attractive place to live.A GENA group has kept the Spring Glen triangle area so beautiful with flowers that people are constantly asking "Who does the work and who pays for the flowers?"We rescued Betty Ann Lane by cleaning it up and researching it's ownership. Once ownership was established, we had them address it's maintenance. We look forward to a clean, safe and attractive lane in the future. Many other tasks were accomplished. Replacement of street signs and working with the City tree trimmers, was an example. And for this year symbol 151 \f "Times New Roman Special G1" \s 10?—Problems still abound in our neighborhood and in the city in general. For instance, the west end still needs a way for storm water to escape. We are still waiting for flood control construction to start. Litter is constantly overwhelming our clean up resources. Businesses need help with store front facades. We will make an effort this year to work with Englewood churches and try to get their members active in Adopt-a-road. If we could get most roads adopted by churches, schools and GENA, we may be able to stave off being wallpapered by careless citizens. We expect to work with the South Metro Business Association once it gets organized. We have businesses here who should not be allowed to operate if they can't control patrons trashing in and around their establishments. One case in point is the pool hall at Santa Monica and University Blvd. Next time in that area take note of the beer bottles and food wrappers around the building. GENA cleaned up the area not long ago and the owner was asked to do the same.A new "old" problem is speeding students around Englewood High School. Children in area day care centers are endangered. What is the solution? Do we constantly call the police? Do we ask for a lowering of the speed limit? Bring your solutions to the GENA meeting.
