GPPCA ON PARADE

The Greater Pinellas Point Civic Association was again represented at the 77th Annual Christmas Parade held Decenber 4th along Bayshore Dr. in Downtown St Petersburg. Oneill's Marina a business member of our association donated the use of a brand new boat to be used as our float.This annual donation has been a long tradition for this event and helps portray our proximity to the water.
We extend our appreciation to Stacy Pitts in the Sales Office for her assistance. Board member Frank Scarpetta carried the banner. Our leader John Bagg towed the float.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Hi Neighbor

Both the parade participation and the annual GPPCA Christmas potluck party were tremendous successes. It's always enjoyable to watch the kids at the Santa Parade, and we had good food, good company, and good times at the Christmas Party. The board of Directors performing "Frosty the Snowman" was entertaining(?). It was a wonderfull opportunity to meet neighbors in a holiday mood.
A major topic of the January meeting will be the potential and the difficulties of underground utilities. The speaker will be from Progress Energy. After this past hurricane season, we are all interested in what it will take to protect our utility service. There are efforts to push underground utilities from CONA and from local governments. This will be an opportunity to register our interest and support for this effort.
We are meeting and planning with the city Neighborhood Services Office about continuing the review of the Neighborhood Plan. We hope to have an announcement at the January meeting about how this will progress. We look forward to completing this long over due task to help guide the future development of our neighborhood while protecting it's unique character.

LOVE LIFE ON THE POINT? SO DO WE!

* We hosted hearings on the delopment of a local traffic plan which was supported by the city and is now being
enforced.
* We have supported the establishment of the Pinellas Point Foundation, a not for profit that supports education and provides scholarships for children in our neighborhood.
* We recognize and award monthly certificates to our neighbors who have "beautified" their home environments thereby enhancing the neighborhood for us all.
* We have worked with businesses and developers that want to move into our community and encouraged them to represent the specific needs of residents. Major ongoing projects we are monitoring are the Huber Marina
development, the new Walgreens, the redevelopment of Bay Village Shopping Center, and others.

* We have been active in representing the neighborhood interest with the city in developing desirable businesses in our area. We have received a sizable grant from Walgreens to be used to promote a healthy business climate in our area.

HOME SECURITY SURVEY
Burglars follow the path of least resistance when going about their work. The first step in bolstering your home against break-ins is to identify the features of your home that make it an attractive target.
Start your security inspection at the front door and proceed through the home. Inspecting all doors, windows, locks, lights and landscaping.

DOORS
1. Are all outside doors made of metal or solid wood?
2. Are there windows within 40 inches of door locks?
3. Are exterior hinges protected?
4. Are doors frames strong and tight enough to prevent forcing or spreading?
5. Are all doors adequate and in good condition?
6. Are strike plates and strikes adequate and properly installed?
7. Is it possible to reach the locking mechanism through a mail slot, or pet entrance?
8. Does the screen or storm door have an adequate lock?
9. Are all entrances lighted with at least a 40-watt bulb?
10. Can the front entrance be observed from the street or public area?
11. Is there a sliding glass door, is it impossible to lift it out its tracks?
12. Is a “charley bar” or key operated auxiliary lock used in the sliding glass door?

ENTRANCES FROM GARAGES
1. Are all entrances to living quarters from garage of metal or solid wood construction?
2. Does the door from the garage to the living quarters have adequate locks?

WINDOWS
1. Do all windows have adequate locks in good operating conditions?
2. Do windows have screens or storm windows that lock from the outside?
3. Are all exterior areas near windows free of concealing structures or landscaping?
4. Are all windows adequately lighted on the exterior?
5. Are tree and shrubbery trimmed away from upper floor windows?
6. Are ladders kept inside the house or garage where they can not be used to access upper floors?

If you answered the above questions with more that two “NO” answers there is a good chance a burglar could break into your home. You may want to consider a security system. The Crime Prevention Unit of the St Petersburg Police Department conducts free home security inspection for any resident in the city.

Your Assotiation

The annual Christmas Party was held at Bay Vista Recreation Center on December 21st in lieu of a business meeting. Hospitality board member Rohn Shaw set up the facility and recruited Key Entertainment with Jimbo and Terrie Myers to provide Karaoke signing along fun all in the Holiday spirit. The board even offered an ensemble version of “Frosty the Snowman” We enjoyed share dishes from the great kitchens and cooks of the Association. Pastor David Allen Jr. of Hope of Glory UMC did the invocation. Thanks to all who came out and made the party a wonderful success
