The Greater Strathmore Neighborhood Association

The Parks Run is back!

Nov 01, 2006

The Parks Run on Sunday, October 8, 2006 was very successful. Nearly 200 people were registered for the 4 mile run/walk event and they had a fabulous sunny fall day. The weather couldn't have been more perfect and Onondaga Park couldn't have looked better. The course was challenging but the addition of the reservoir and the water tower really did provide some beautiful views of the city.

The 1st place male finisher was Richard Terpening, with a time of 24:32 (nearly a minute ahead of 2nd place)
The 1st place female finisher was Barb Wells in 28:56.

Jim Burns was the 1st Strathmore neighbor to cross the finish line and placed 6th overall. Abby Crain was the 1st female Strathmore runner.

While there were many Strathmore neighbors participating, a majority of the participants came from outside the neighborhood. Some from other parts of the city and some from the nearby suburbs and towns, like Camillus, Fayetteville, Liverpool, Cazenovia, Marcellus, Cicero, and DeWitt. We even had several participants from out-of-state (Massachussetts, Ohio, and Colorado). Within the neighborhood, we had participants from 17 different streets, with Robineau Rd being the most represented, followed by Wellesley Rd, and then Twin Hills.
Lots of neighbors cheered on the runners along the route.

The Kids Fun Run was also a nice addition to the line-up. Approximately two dozen kids sprinted, galloped, or walked around Hiawatha Lake. They all received ribbons and lots of encouragement.

After the sporting events, there was an awards ceremony, live music from Gary Frenay & Arty Lenin, food provided by the SouthSide American Little League, and a "jumpy palace" for the kids.

A lot of gratitude is owed to a lot of people for making it such a nice event:

THANK YOU to the City of Syracuse and especially the Syracuse Parks Department for all of their support. Commissioner Pat Driscoll, MaryBeth Roach, and Jim Cowburn provided a lot of support and made sure our green spaces were in top shape.

THANK YOU to all of the volunteers (there were dozens of them) and especially to race coordinators Brea Allers and Tim Rosbrook. Their willingness to resurrect the race after a one year hiatus resulted in a lot of good publicity for the neighborhood, brought in a lot of new visitors to Strathmore, and provided a great opportunity for neighbors of all ages to come together and have some fun. Can't wait 'till next year!
