The Greenacres-Woodward Community

Visitors to Greenacres-Woodward are often surprised when they turn off busy Eight Mile Road onto one of the streets of our neighborhood. Here, in one of the largest urban-industrial centers of the world, is a green and peaceful oasis. Fortunately for us, early developers were sensitive to the beauty of the forest that once covered this area. They spared the trees and the wildflowers, so that today, Greenacres is a pleasant place to live.

Much of the attractiveness of Greenacres-Woodward comes from its well-cared-for homes which represent a variety of architectural styles. Luxury features such as formal dining rooms, paneled dens, ceramic tile, extra baths, and enclosed porches are common. Some houses offer hand-pegged hardwood floors, leaded windows, beamed living room ceilings and other interesting details of design. Wet plastered walls and natural fireplaces are found in nearly every house. A high level of craftmanship and quality materials are evident throughout. Sizes vary from about 1200 to 2500 square feet, with full and often finished basements.

Many fine schools, public and private, are available to children living in Greenacres-Woodward. Formal schooling, however, is neither the beginning nor the end of our children's education. Daily, our young people are exposed to the wide variety of ethnic and religious cultures, age groups, and occupations represented in the residents of Greenacres.

Located in the center of the Detroit Metropolitan area, Greenacres-Woodward is bounded by Woodward, Livernois, West Eight Mile and Pembroke. It is located midway between two freeways, and is a short drive form any point in the metropolitan area. Shopping centers, churches, recreational facilities, and hospitals are nearby. Our community is also well-served by express buses.

Community Spirit

An enthusiastic community spirit is a special feature of Greenacres-Woodward. One focus is an active neighborhood association, led by an openly elected board of 16 directors. A friendly and helpful spirit permeates the projects of the association and daily contacts among neighbors. Community activities includes:

Picnic and Concerts in Hyde Park, which is located in Greenacres.

The Judge Myron H. Wahls Gazebo, contructed for the community in honor of the late Judge Wahls, a Greenacres resident, who contributed many things to the community.

" Clean Sweep, " in which residents unite to beautify the common areas of the neighborhood with flowers and greenery.

Community newsletter (The Greenacres Woodward Civic Association News), published eleven times a year.

Greenacres Community Radio Patrol, a separate organization, which acts as the eyes and ears of the community while patrolling the streets of Greenacres.
