Home Security Part II By BJ Jones

Keep an Eye on the Streets.

Remain vigilant and watch for suspicious vehicles or persons in the neighborhood. If someone doesn't look like they belong, they probably don't.

Collect telephone numbers from the neighbors next door to you and across the street. If you see someone who looks suspicious, call your neighbors and let them know. They may be able to tell you who it is and why they are there. Also, don't be afraid to be seen, instead, make it obvious you're watching. Your presence may deter the criminal from patrolling the area and save your neighbor (and maybe you) from becoming a victim. However, never approach a suspicious individual. Trust your instincts and call the police if you feel someone is conducting criminal activities.

1. IMPORTANT: Keep your neighbor's telephone numbers listed on the inside of your kitchen cabinets so you don't have to dig through address/telephone books to find their information quickly

Shredding your Life Away.

Criminals can steal your identity and learn a lot about you by digging through your trash. Oddly enough, your waste tells a lot about your life. One bag of trash can reveal your name, where you shop, where you work, what your interests/hobbies are, how much money you make, how much money you spend, and where you spend it. That's a lot of information! To avoid identity theft and other (limitless) crimes, SHRED YOUR PAPERS. This includes address labels from bills and junk mail. Best Buy, Office Depot, and Wal-Mart all carry low to moderately priced shredders. Bank and pay statements, special interest magazines, credit card offers, and junk mail can lead to a lot of trouble if they reach the wrong hands.

1. Remove name and address labels from ALL magazines and junk mail, then shred them

2. Take your shredded documents, newspapers, and magazines to the recycling bin located at the Duck Pond or at Cody Elementary School

3. This ensures no one can link your interests and junk mail to you and also helps the environment by reducing landfill waste!
