'Tis the Season

May 13, 2004

And I don?’t mean the holiday season.

We all know what to expect during the spring and summer months along the gulf coast. Of course, I am talking about the storm season. It has been many years since there has been a catastrophic hurricane hit this area. This is not a prediction that we will have one this year. It does mean that no matter what may or may not be predicted we need to have our homes and families prepared for the possibility of such a happening. Below are a few things we should do for preparation in the case of a severe natural calamity, be it a storm or some other type of catastrophe.

1. Have a plan of action.
2. If need be, know where you will go if required to evacuate.
3. If evacuation not recommended:
a. Have supply of drinking water on hand (1 gallon per person per day)
b. Have non-perishable food on hand (make it food that needs little or no cooking)
c. Know where your medications are (have them handy)
d. Keep a hurricane tracking map available (follow those instructions also)
e. Listen to and heed the advises of the emergency management professionals
f. Get involved in the local emergency volunteer programs. CERT ?– Community Emergency Response Teams. EMS ?– Emergency Medical Services. ARC ?– American Red Cross.

IF ANYONE IS INTERESTED IN BECOMING INVOLVED IN ONE OF THESE VOLUNTEER ORGANIZATIONS, CONTACT THE UNDERSIGNED AT 281-583-7968
