Community Supported Agriculture provides the consumer with a personal connection with their food and an opportunity to support sustainable agriculture. During the growing season consumers receive a basket (share) of fresh, locally grown produce. A share consists of a variety of produce, herbs and flowers depending on the season. The consumers know who grows their food and where it comes from. By paying an upfront fee they provide start up capital for the farm sharing in the risks and benefits. The farmer benefits from having a known market and can concentrate on what they do best-grow great food! Fox Run Farm puts all its growing energy into its CSA so our clients get the best of what is available. Ame also teaches classes in alternative agriculture, organic gardening, self sufficiency and building low cost housing.
Members purchase shares in the winter months of January - March or until we are full. Our season runs a minimum of 20 weeks beginning sometime in late May. One share will approximately feed an average family of four omnivores or two vegetarians. Produce baskets will be less at the beginning and end of the season and most bountiful in July and August. We plan for a variety of produce each week. (See examples below)Consumers also receive a bi-monthly newsletter with recipes and crop information to help them plan their menus.
Cost of one regular share is $400.00 for the 2009 season - a half share is $200.00
Pickup at the farm is free.
Delivery options are available at an additional cost. Delivery is available in Northern Kentucky and Hamilton County in Ohio. Delivery fees for the season are an extra $25 for Kentucky Group Locations and an extra $50 for Ohio Group Locations. Delivery Hosts receive a discount. We also do Home Delivery for $100 per season.
A share consists of a variety of produce, herbs and flowers. Poundage is not always the most accurate way to describe a share because a pound of potatoes is not equal to a pound of greens. That said we strive for an average of 10 pounds weekly. In spring your share will consist more of greens which will be lighter in weight to a share in August which may contain a 7lb melon plus a variety of other produce. We strive for diversity in our shares of 5-12 different items.
An example of what may be in an early June Share
~1 head of lettuce
~1 bag of mixed greens
~1 bunch swiss chard
~1 bunch spinach
~1 bunch beets
~1 bunch green onion
~½ lb of snap peas
~1 bunch radishes
~1 bunch salad turnips
~1 head Chinese cabbage
~1 bunch herbs
An example of what may be in a Mid July Share
~4 salad tomatoes
~2 green peppers
~3 lbs of potatoes
~2 lbs of green beans
~2 lbs of squash
~3 cukes
~1 melon
~1 bunch greens
~4 salad turnips
~1 head cabbage
~1 bunch herbs
Fox Run Farm does not use any chemical fertilizers or pesticides. Instead we build our soil using lots of compost, green manures and no till practices. Utilizing row covers, intercropping and mulching helps to keep insects at bay. We are committed to using organic and biodynamic methods but we are not certified. We grow heirloom vegetables and support heritage farming traditions. We raise heritage breeds of chickens in movable pens so they can forage naturally on grass and insects yet be protected from the local coyotes. Fox Run Farm has put aside 4 of its 11 acres for wildlife habitat. In addition we plant trees and shrubs that benefit wildlife.. Fox Run is off grid and uses solar power for energy. Putting our money where our mouth is we patronize sustainable seed companies such as Fedco, Johnnys and Seed Savers. Fox Run Farm also is a participant and community leader in Plant A Row For The Hungry and donates food to our local free store. We also offer free alternative agriculture classes in our community.

Meet Ame, Your CSA Farmer
Ame Vanorio grew up on a traditional Kentucky farm with horses, cattle and tobacco. A deep passion for environmental issues led her into alternative agriculture. Thank you for sharing with us the inherent risks of farming. We can not guarantee what each growing season will bring due to varying weather, pests and diseases. We will guarantee to plant a wide variety of crops so that if one crop is diminished due to factors beyond our control then others will flourish. We promise to do everything we can to raise successful crops. You agree that you will pickup your share at your scheduled distribution day and time and understand that if you do not, it will be donated elsewhere. If you are on vacation you may designate a friend to pick up your share or have it donated to a free store. This is a non-refundable season-long contract.
