1-12-04 Meeting Minutes

Committee Reports

Safety: Our Senior Neighborhood Officer, Scott Westerman, was unable to attend the meeting this month due to Vice President Cheney’s visit to Portland. Please contact Officer Westerman with any crime related questions, swesterman@police.ci.portland.or.us.

Land Use: There is one land use application pending regarding a land division at 4644 SW Fairvale Court. A hearing will be held January 27, 2004, 9 am at 1900 SW Fourth Ave, Suite 3000. Interested parties are encouraged to attend. We haven’t heard anything new regarding Cedar Sinai Park or the property at the corner of Boundary Street and Shattuck. The new Plaid Pantry at 45th and Vermont should begin construction this
spring.

Transportation: There has been some concern this past week about snow removal on the sidewalks. Although it is the property owners’ responsibility to keep sidewalks clear, that was very hard to do after the city plowed the streets and pushed the snow onto the sidewalks. It was particularly treacherous for Tri-met riders. This will be brought up at the SWNI Transportation Committee meeting this month. The new 20 mph speed limit in school zones (24 hours a day, 7 days a week) will be implemented during the summer of 2004, when the city can install new signage.

2004 HNA Association Elections

Elections were held – Lillie Fitzpatrick, Chair; Chris Raydon-Feeney, Vice Chair; Gary Hoselton, Secretary; Joe Higgins, Parks, Environment and Livability; Carolyn Rundorf, SWTrails. We still need a Land Use Chair and a Safety Chair. If you would like to be involved for a minimal amount of time, please contact Lillie Fitzpatrick, lf@pdx.edu.

Next Meeting, Tuesday, 10 February 2004

Our next meeting will include a presentation by the American Red Cross. This Be Aware and Prepare presentation will help individuals, families and organizations prevent, prepare for and respond to disasters, both natural and man-made, (fire, earthquake, severe storm...). The presentation discusses how people can reduce the potentially traumatic impact of a disaster, and offers suggestions on how to prevent injuries, save lives and reduce the loss of property. It also offers suggestions on developing a family disaster plan, stresses the importance of being trained in First Aid/CPR, and lastly emphasizes what individuals and families should include in their disaster supplies kits. This is particularly timely after the winter storm we just experienced. Please join us!
