Hayhurst

2-11-03 Meeting Minutes

Guest Speaker

Stephanie Reynolds, SWNI Crime Prevention Specialist, spoke to HNA about crime in our neighborhood. Although crime is relatively infrequent in southwest Portland, car prowls and graffiti continue to occur. Car prowls are preventable by keeping your car “showroom” clean – do not leave enticing items in view. It is important not to leave your garage door opener in your car as thieves can steal it along with your registration, which contains your address. Officer Westerman reminded us that car security systems do not alarm if the window is broken. If you cannot lock your car in a garage, lighting - especially motion triggered - helps deter criminals.

Stephanie described the four types of graffiti and says most graffiti we see is “tagging” and is not gang related. It is important to report and clean up or paint over graffiti as soon as possible. You can do it yourself or contact the Graffiti Removal Program at 503-249-2856. Stephanie says identity theft is very common today. There is an excellent guide on the internet at www.consumer.gov/idtheft/ (see link below).

The Neighborhood Watch program is an important tool in reducing crime. There are seven official Neighborhood Watch programs in Hayhurst. Stephanie can meet with and train neighbors to start their own Neighborhood Watch. Please contact her at 503-823-3131 to see how easy it can be.

Committee Reports

Land Use:
We have received notification of a request to vacate certain portions of SW Hillsdale Court and SW Sunnyside, near the 4300 of Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway. Representatives of the petitioner will speak at our March meeting.

David Fuks, CEO of Cedar Sinai Park (CSP), announced that they have completed the purchase of 10 acres of Alpenrose property located on SW Boundary Street. Although there are no immediate plans, CSP would like to build a new nursing facility on the property.

Parks and Environment:
Parks is working on a plan to survey use of school fields to help in the discussion of the decision by Portland Public Schools to dispense of “excess” property.

Several neighbors have had trouble with off-leash and free roaming dogs in the neighborhood. Two husky type dogs have physically attacked a cat and a smaller dog. Anyone with information regarding these particular rogue dogs is encouraged to contact Multnomah Animal Control. Multnomah Animal Control will now accept photos of off-leash dogs as evidence for ticketing. Please take note of car licenses or owner name and address for the report.

Transportation:
Sylvia McFarland reported that she attended a meeting with PDOT engineers to discuss the possibility of adding three pedestrian islands, or refuges, to the center lane of Beaverton Hillsdale Highway between 56th and 65th Avenues. We should have more information regarding this exciting development soon.

SW Trails:
OHSU is building trails up to and around their campus as part of the Markham Hill Plan. Lillie Fitzpatrick will continue to work on the Safe Routes to School program.

Schools:
One of the possible outcomes of the public school budget process is that the children and teachers from Mary Rieke Elementary in Hillsdale may move to Bridlemile and Hayhurst Elementary. Shannon Kelly has contacted Jan Collins, Principal of Hayhurst, and has offered our help with the move.
