Noting the recent pedestrian fatality on Beaverton-Hillsdale Hwy, we discussed the dangers to pedestrians when crossing B-H Hwy between 56th and Oleson Road. It was noted that although there are many businesses, Tri-Met and School Bus stops, and residences and apartment complexes along this stretch of road, there are no traffic lights, pedestrian islands, or crosswalks to facilitate a safe crossing. Sylvia McFarland made a motion to petition PDOT to investigate pedestrian safety issues along this stretch of B-H Hwy. Cedar Sinai Park representative Bill Stinnett also agreed to write a letter in support of pedestrian safety measures.

Leonard Gard of SWNI presented The Tryon/Fanno Creek Watershed Plan. Leonard pointed out that Fanno Creek, which passes through our neighborhood, is listed with the state for four deficiencies; high temperature, high bacterial count, low oxygen content, and high phosphorous levels. A plan is required to fix these deficiencies. Please contact Leonard at the SWNI office for more information.

Lillie Fitzpatrick reported on plans for Safe Routes to School in the SW. She will be working with the SW Trails group to help schools formulate Safe Routes. She also rode with a Portland Police officer to observe traffic flow on Shattuck Road and along Beaverton-Hillsdale Hwy. She reported that although all drivers on Shattuck drove within the speed limit, drivers routinely drive 15 to 30 mph over the posted speed limit on Beaverton-Hillsdale Hwy.

Joe Higgins reported on the status of the Portland Public School’s “disposition of surplus property,” which includes portions of Hayhurst Elementary School property. We decided to organize an effort to document use of the property outside of school use.
