Highland Park Neighborhood Association Annual Holiday Decorations Contest

Each year the Highland Park Neighborhood Association recognizes outstanding decorated houses and yards that display a holiday theme. Criteria are:
* a clear holiday theme
* visibility of decorations during night and day
* may not have received 1st or 2nd prize previous year

All homes in the Highland Park area (bounded by Interstates 37 and 10, and Avenues Clark and Fair) are eligible and will be considered. Teams of volunteers tour the area and form lists of recommended winners, then compare lists and have a team of judges view the finalists and award prizes. Winners are notified and asked for permission to have their names and addresses published and broadcast as winners.

Prizes are 1st, 2nd and 3rd place and honorable mentions. The prizes usually include restaurant certificates, and all winners are recognized with placement of a yard sign to alert other neighbors of the outstanding decorations.

The judges will be touring the neighborhood December 14 (Saturday) and December 15 (Sunday) after sunset. All contestants should have their decorations completed before December 14.

?“Urban Gardener?” Rachel Cywinski will provide decorations and donate a door prize for every family in attendance.
Local school students will sing Christmas carols!
Bring food from your own kitchen, to share.
If you cannot, then please just bring yourself!

The Highlands Community Plan comes to us! We will start the year by reviewing and reminding ourselves of the purpose of our organization, and putting our community plan into implementation. HPNA member Patrick Sandoval will describe the plan, and he and other implementation team members will provide opportunities for every member to become more involved in the community!

During the November 9 general monthly membership meeting, the membership unanimously elected the slate of 2003 officers and directors suggested by the Nominations Committee.

2003: Representative Board
When electing officers the membership also agreed with the proposal of the Nominations Committee that the Board of Directors include persons who represent various aspects of the community, including business, schools, and single parents or parents of young children.
The 2003 Board of Directors and officers reflects such a composition.
2004: Advisory Board
When electing officers the membership also agreed with the proposal of the Nominations Committee that an Advisory Board be implemented for the 2004 elections a year from now.
Persons wishing to address this issue should contact the neighborhood association, or volunteer to assist with implementation.
